Have we sunk so low?

It's been a few months since I've been around this board. Between a new baby and a bunch of Army shit keeping me busy, I haven't had much time for Defenders. When I logged on today, I was surprised and seriously disappointed to see that the owners of D-90 Source are now running pop-up ads for Wal-Mart computers on the site:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16837290/Discoweb/wtfads.jpg

Whatever happened to "relevant advertising from select Land Rover vendors"? I guess that didn't work out and now this site is being pimped for everything that's left in the tank. What's next, selling access to the older posts?

This is a sad turn for D-90 Source.

If you're running Google Chrome with Adblock, it's pretty effective at blocking them. I still see them within Safari and also running Chrome on my iPad.

I am running Firefox, and I don't see anything. If you are logged in, and a current member, I don't think you are supposed to see any ads.

OK, it apparently only shows up if you aren't logged in. It's still awful and crappy and makes me wonder "what's next?".

I am sure others know a lot more but I believe you may need to check your settings in the control panel. Since you were a member before the ad placement you should have the option to turn them on or off

------ Follow up post added August 29th, 2012 01:09 PM ------

As a side note, I run Chrome and see no ads

There is a cost to provide us with the Forum... I am not concerned about the ads at all.

They've kept their promise so far - if you were a member and are logged in (of course) then you will not see ads.

Im sure eventually some changes are inevitable..im failing to see how they can make a profit to keep this "free to us" service running otherwise.

if everthing stayed the same who wouldnt pay $20.00 a year? the tech info on this site alone has saved users hundreds in not thousands of dollars in repairs and product evaluations! I pay $10.00 a year for my weather site just to avoid ads.

Chris - log in and you won't see ads. Ad avoidance increases board participation by encouraging lurkers to register and regular members to log in

I personally think that's fair - and as a friendly suggestion, I personally would be open to any ads that are at least somewhat relevant (tire companies, castrol, gas stations) to the audience.. And would actually *like* to see targeted ads for Rover enthusiasts. Wouldn't the clickthrough for a RN/AB coupon or sale be pretty high here? And is it a question of sales resources for each specific forum, i.e. easier to get on an google ads vs working with specific vendors?

What's sad is your continued two faced behavior. You continue to come here, yet bash the site elsewhere every chance you can get. Pathetic.

If you thought there was a problem with popup ads, at least have the decency to ask and find out why before bashing the site.

Why have you sunk so low?

Charles, your link doesn't seem to work.

I will vote yes for setting up a cookie jar to keep the site clean.

Funny until you mentioned the ads I had no idea they even existed. I guess being a long time member has its advantages. But I am pretty sure all the new forums I have joined have the same type of ads? I guess that is the price to pay for a free site, but hey I can put up with some ads for the free info. Geez with all the problems in the world, find something else to bitch about.

Two-faced? Hardly, Charles. My opinion stated on EE is exactly the same as my opinion stated here. The only two-faced person is you. You are the one that's being trying to make this personal and start something.

From the rules:

I think hover ads look like shit and that they're the mark of a desperate forum owner. This is my opinion and it is respectfully stated. If you want to make this personal and start attacking me, bring it to the EE site where we can launch ad hominem attacks without violating rules. My postings have been civil and I intend to keep it that way.
