Hover ads for Wal-Mart computers is where I draw the line. They are useless and make the site look like one of those garbage sites you get when you accidentally mistype a URL. I wouldn't be surprised if their presence to non-logged-in vistors hurts the organic search rankings of this site and makes it harder for Google users to find information on this site.

X2

I don't see any adds.

IMSMR "old" users shouldn't see them.

Log out and you will see them. This add was particularly funny. I am sure Lexus enjoys the association.
Regarding the adds we do see, I like the targeted ebay listings. Anything that is Rover related is fine by me. We are lucky to have this free website for our use.

I dont think Charles is being two faced at all, this is a community- if you think D90 has sunken to a new low...you are free to not log in or visit the site. Going to EE to drag D90 through the ditch wont win you many fans on here.

Its sort of funny that the comment was about the advertising...Exped Exchange has no less than 100 ads on the home page alone....I didnt know if I was looking at a website or the side of a car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit.

I just logged out and didn't see any ads. Oh well. Guess they don't want to sell me anything.

Josh nailed it. Actually, the promise was to grandfather in members who had joined before the announcement of the ownership change was made. There will be regular display ads at some point (only seen by guests or members who were not grandfathered in) but I haven't gotten around to setting them up. Even newbie members who were not grandfathered in will be given a choice to pay a small annual fee so they can turn them off or they can use an ad blocker for free.

There are thousands of free services provided to everyone because they are supported by ads. Google, Bing, Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, and the list goes on...

If you really dislike the in-text links, you can disable them so you don't have to see them when you are browsing the site as a guest. Just go to the following link and scroll all the way down to the bottom and click on the "Click here to disable" link. It's cookie based so if/when you clear your cookies you will need to opt out again. This will also disable them on every other sites that uses their service, so if you dislike them that much, probably worth the click >> scroll >> click.

In my opinion, this site is an insane value at a much greater cost than free.

I just logged out and navigated around some, no ads.
Firefox + NoScript + AdBlock Plus + Ghostery works well.
