It is very rare for people to have their CB radios properly tuned, which is why I'm totally against them. FRS or Ham should be the standard. I will eventually get my Ham license.

At some point when I'm back check out the little (cheap) handheld Baofeng's that I have in Coyote. Throw the bigger battery and a better antenna on it and they run circles around FRS and CB-in my experience.

KI6TUC here. Tech in 2008 and General in 2013.
Icom 208h in D110 and FT857 for base and portable use, as well as Yaesu H/T.
As Neill said all but one of the LRCSD club regulars is at least a tech.
Now learning HF digital using Winlink system with Signalink external sound card.

For those of you that have your Ham license, how did you study for the test? My girlfriend bought a book on it, but I much prefer reading on a screen. Any good websites or apps?

The ARRL book is straightforward. The tech license will be a breeze for you Jimmy. Iversoft has a good app for you.

First, everyone learns in different ways. What works for her may make no sense to you.

I learned from the Gordon West books. I've taught maybe 20 Tech classes and 3 or 4 General classes all using Gordon West.

You want fast and free? Callsign Database by QRZ.COM and use the practice exams. Once you are regularly scoring the the mid 80 percents, you are ready to take the real exam.

Out of curiosity, are most vehicle to vehicle comms for folks on here on the trail done in HF (excluding CB) or 144/430?

Would running an HF only rig (like an Icom 7200) be pretty much useless on the trail?

Are folks using DMR or NXDN in overwhelming majority nowadays?

144/430, at least in my limited application. That is bc when I think HF I think long haul comms vs LOS UHF or VHF applications.
