sign it! the existing laws only favor MB,BMW, Jaguar/LRNA,Mini etc. and are basically only protectionism. In the 80's you could bring in anything and bring it up to current epa/dot standards. Guess who spent the money to lobby and get the legislaton passed to end that ?

I am too lazy to read. What will the petition actually do? 25k signatures and they will change the law or is this going in the circular file next to the wrapper of a subway footlong?

Probably the latter.

you never know. Rookie congressmen often look for stuff to write bills about for consideration. 25k signatures might appeal to someone.

15yr old lr diesels have cats as do most european vehicles of that vintage. They were a little late to the party but as the black forest died in Germany they figured it out-these aren't polluters any more so than US products. Thats a major part of whats inane about the law.

15 year old cars sometimes run better than 25 year old ones and are generally safer as well... It's not like any cars made in Europe or elsewhere are any less safe than cars we can already get... such as an 83 defender or say an 87 caprice classic.

The Good news - petition made on Bring-A-Trailer website yesterday (lots and lots of traffic).

The Bad News - let's not kid ourselves the car lobbies have just a little more sway than this petition (regardless how many sign it). Grassroots efforts will not overcome protectionism (especially when politicians want to be perceived as pro-US-business, or i.e. supporting Detroit and new car sales).

The premise behind the 25-year rule is that a 25 year-old vehicle is no longer a viable daily driver and would only be used "occassionaly". If they (lawmakers/NHTSA) thought that 25-year-old vehicles would become daily drivers they'd find a way to make it 30 or 35-years, NOT the other way.

I'll sign it regardless to support the movement!

I think the japanese have a similar rule after so many years or miles the taxes increase a certain percentage. I know there are a lot of "JDM" parts and engines available here through importers.

I think if this is labeled an enthusiast movement and the occasional driver, then that favors us, as the automakers and the pro-environmental white house won't see this as something of a magnitude that will work against greenhouse, polition. In their minds it will be an easy concession to allow in any energy/environmental policy.

It does not look like it is going to reach the 25,000 threshold signature.
