Got Rust?

A buddy of mine sent me pics of this '94 he's looking at. I've never seen rust that bad on a 90. The frame is solid though.

tire carrier sucks anyway, the brushbar sucks anyway, and doors are readily available.

We can only hope the Po(s) took better care of the rest of the truck!! But by the looks of it, the overall level of care was pretty low.

Are they asking for an up or down vote on whether to buy? I would say run away, the frame probably looks the same as the doors, on the inside.

Appearances can be deceptive though. Below are three photos of the chassis of my '94 200tdi in the UK after I stripped it down. The rear cross member has started to go, so I had decided to rebuild the whole truck anyway eventually deciding on a galvanized chassis from Richards chassis. The rest of the truck looked pretty good when I started, and I was initially thinking that I might even be able to repair the chassis, its amazing what lurks in the hidden areas of an otherwise solid chassis.

Not looking for a thumbs up or down vote. My buddy, actually cousin, deals in exotic and classic cars - buy low sell high kinda thing. He'll buy it, fix it, flip it. Not sure if he is buying this one.

Frame looks decent to me, mostly surface rust. Even the crossmember appears solid. I know, until you tap it with your finger and your whole fist goes through.

I see two options:

1) Run

2) Cheap truck

That water was mostly oily so my frame is now rejuvenated!

If your buddy passes, PM me the info. I need a V8 rust bucket clean title donor. I prefer a 94/95 NAS if I can find one for cheap enough but would also take a 110 V8 import. I should have bought the 97 SW for $13k, but I don't want to deal with OBD II.

It looks like it was parked outside near the ocean. The inside of the frame is likely very scaley at least that is my experience with near ocean trucks. The outside looks fine, but it rots from the inside out because the salt air gets in and it never really dries out.

Hard to tell without looking at it though.

Yes, it is ron good.

Ok, I'm about to start on a frame replacement from a 97 SW from New Jersey next month. Beautiful body and interior , especially for 150k, but OMG the frame's a mess.
We should start a rust picture thread to see just how bad they can be.....

Why do you say the tire carrier sucks?
Just curios, as I'm about to put the ST carrier on my truck.

I like the carrier and think it's well designed. About the only flaw is that it isn't galvanized.

Hard to see where they could make any money on it after the work it will need unless it is a 10K mile truck or they convert it to a new puma.

This truck was on the SF Bay craigslist, looks like the ad is gone now though. The owner told me that the truck had been sitting in half moon bay for an extended period of time. He said it had either 130 or 160k miles, can't remember.
