Got a new toy today..

Always wanted to take cool aerial and action pics with these...make for great aerial shots of remote camp sites and cool places...also very useful when tracing overgrown trails and tracks...much easier to see where they lead from an aerial perspective..

Ive thought about a getting a drone for off trail recce. Great idea. I can think of a few times it would have come in handy in Guatemala.

Is that the 2 or 3?
The friend I work with just ordered the 3 to add to the kit and I think he wants me to be the pilot. I've had much better luck directing a pilot & cam operator team but it will fun to learn.
Be careful where you fly…. drones are in a sticky situation currently mostly for commercial use.

It's the one before the vision2 ..I've heard the vision2 camera way very susceptible to breaking and is expensive.. I have a few of the wireless go pros and will use that..

I have the phantom 2. My future brother in law and myself each got one for xmas from my folks. He has been flying his everyday before and after work. You can switch out the cameras and put what ever you have onto the gimble.
Unique to the DJI tech is that they upload an update (no way around it) of all the no fly zone areas around the nation and world(?). If you fly into a zone it will automatically fly itself out of the zone depending at altitude and angle it flew into the no fly zone.
Also comes with a fly to home base function (automatically) when it either gets low power or out of range.

Where did you get the pelican case for it?

There are also some sources that have come online recently that help quadcopter pilots navigate such as,

I actually bought the whole setup like this, and personally I think I got a good deal on it..paid about $400.. I wanted something like this in the case so I can take it on our round the world trip, so it needs to be in a sturdy case..the case appears to be a knock off of a pelican case..doesn't seem as sturdy as other pelican cases I have

The sticker on the case says GOPROFESSIONAL..custom extreme cases

Oh, that is a very good deal. Base model I think still runs at $500 or more. Thats without the case you have yours in. I have an extra battery, car charger, extra 2 sets of rotors(?) with mine.
You can also program within the app a pre-specified route for the quadcopter to follow. The battery only lasts for about 21 minutes so you might want extras on hand.
There are a bunch of Youtube vids from DJI and others on how to's and etc for the quadcopter.

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREFLIGHT!!!!! Otherwise it will not be tuned in enough to be as accurate as it can be and may crash when you first start it up.

Must have missed that yours is a Vision 1. Which one do you have Josh?

We've had the 1 and 2 and I prefer the 1 all day long - much easier to fly and easier to apply mods. Considerably easier to fix, too, which we've done all day long (i.e. my 11-yo can replace almost all the parts). Unsolicited advice:

1. Fly it for a few hours in a huge open field before you do insane things (i.e. truly try to master it)
2. If you lose sight of it, ALWAYS push the height up
3. I've saved it about 10 times by pushing straight up and turning off the controller, thereby sending it right back to your GPS location
4. Don't get crap Chinese batteries.

Enjoy.

Ha I was just kidding. Shayne always has to say how good of a deal he got. It's nice to make him feel like he didn't get the best deal sometimes. I want one but I haven't started looking for one yet. But when I do it will be a better deal than Shayne found.
