Got a little Rover hate thrown my way :-)

First time for everything I guess.

Piled the family in the 90 to do some apple picking on a fantastic Fall morning...had a great time. On the way out, we went for brunch at a local farm stand & deli. Some hills on the way there and the Rover was cold so we were leaving the usual 12j smoke (3k mile engine...nothing crazy).

Pull into the lot and as I am opening the rear door for my daughter, I see an older lady getting out of a Lexus coming my way with a purpose while her husband beeline's it for the farmstand entrance.

Conversation:

Grumpy Old Buzzkill: "Your truck has a problem, it was putting out smoke... Wanted to tell you"

Me (politely): "It is an older diesel, that is normal"

GOB: "it smelled real badly.."

M (still politely): "Yes, older diesels can do that sometimes"

GOB: "It is terrible..."

M (poker face showing irritation and a smirk): "Sorry..."

GOB (couldn't really hear as I had opened the rear door between us and turned away, but I think it was}: "...not be allowed..."

M (walking away): "I would write your Congressman"

Wife gives me the "must you always be a d**k?" look. Yeah, I don't like Grump's stepping into my perfect day.

Then I read the latest details on the VW emissions story...maybe she has a point

VW has been accused of murder already by the AP, old diesel rover drivers would probably qualify as terrorists.

funny, no we weren't rolling coal, more like rolling Macanudo

Should have shown some more restraint..and respect, but back off a bit and not in front of the offspring. We did all have a chuckle and talk a bit about silly people.

I had the flip side yesterday.

Pull up to a stop light next to an old Chevy pickup in primer black. Driver gestures & says something so I roll down the passenger window expecting a bit of hate or Jeep references. The only thing out of his mouth was the love of the old Rovers. Says that will be his next purchase when his Chevy shits the bed.

With the lack of sulfur in the fuel now days, the diesel exhaust smells more like jet engine exhaust you smell at the airport, or possibly kerosene exhaust from a space heater.

Mine burns really clean, I never see black smoke coming out of mine.

Unburnt diesel (white smoke) really does reek. Usually you get that only when the engine is cold or the timing is retarded. I don't like the smell either.

That said, I would've told her to MYOFB and quit tailgating me.

GOB was probably driving one of those hybrid Lexus things that require battery raw materials to travel around the world before becoming something useful. Efficiency for end user not in manufacturing.

I'd like to see the environmental impact of upkeep of a old Rover vs the manufacturer of some new vehicle. At least high and mighty doesnt have to live near the whole in the ground her car came from.

Plus that Lexus will end up in a junkyard someday. I doubt the rover will.
