Which begs an obvious question.

Did LR/Tata Designers attend the same art college the FJ, Mini, Fiat 500, Camaro and Charger designers did?

These remakes did virtually nothing more than take a recognized shape and design cues and put them on an existing and/or shared platform. That's significantly more than what LR designers did, which focused on the latter.

The only resemblance I see is the shape of the hood and the sloped roof. Everything else screams Freelander.

Weak sauce

You are forgetting that there is much more than aesthetics in the design. It must incorporate current crash/impact standards. DOT requirements, and modern manufacturing methods while at the same time keeping current marketing trends in mind. What you could do in 1972 or 1997 can not be done today with the current regs and trends.
I'm still baffled as to why anyone with a real Defender would want a cheap pastiche of the real McCoy to be produced and sold. Besides making a joke out of the Defender, it would take away the special feeling of owning a very uncommon ( in the USA) vehicle.
Thank God that we won't have a pos Defender made in India cheapening the marque. Let that niche be filled by Jeep and Toyota ( and RIP Hummer).

Bingo. People around here buy for that reason. I was talking with one owner listening to him say he "beats the shit out of that old Jeep" pointing to his 3 year old JK. I was thinking, did you have water over the hood at the Pine Barrens or just jumped a curb and the local 7-11?

It was most likely the later, but what Jeep has done is to keep with their roots and made a rig that can sell to the moms that want to drop the top on a nice day going to the beach or to the Wall Street guys that want to take the doors off while driving to the train, or the retired guy that want's to load fishing gear and hang some poles off the front bumper. And to the family that wants to go wheeling on the weekends.

And from having some seat time in an LR4 and owning my '95 90, they should be able to do it MUCH better. But I believe LR could and should charge a higher price. Jeep is the only one in that arena right now? Why wouldn't Land Rover capitalize on it's heritage and go for some easy market share?

I blame the peculiarly afro'd Jeremy Clarkson for the DC100. The bastard!

If it doesn't have a locking center differential, low range, the option for (or standard) locking front and rear diffs, and the ability to swap ratios, then what is the point?

This is more like it. Minus the Jeep emblems and leaf sprung suspension. Lots of Rover clues on this one.

Possibly, but not sure. Just looked like a somewhat revamped Defender.

I had the 80 inch out this morning.

Stopped in at the gas station, and a middle aged Indian looking fellow walked over to me and said, "Now, that's got to be a really early Defender, right?"

Who thinks anyone will ask that of a DC100 in forty or fifty years?

I would just like to remind everyone to watch the live stream tomorrow (Tuesday 13th of Sep 2011) at 9:15 CEST.

This by the way would be at 12:38 AM pacific time or otherwise in about two and half hours. Enjoy the horror show!

I do not check PMs. Call or email if you need something.

ECR is not a parts source. We are not in the mail order business.

I think that convertible as is will make Land Rover a lot of money. I actually think it's an innovative design and will have mass appeal. That said, it is NOT a Defender. I think them calling it a Defender is actually the offensive part for all of us. I have NO idea how they think they can keep the military/commercial market with that. it really needs to be it's own product line. They totally missed the mark on the evolutionary track that Jeep took.
