I guess for those of you who doubt that this new concept will look like the actual production model, here's an interesting comparison from LR's history:

Defender SVX 1999 vs. Defender SVX 2008

Yours looks a lot closer than the new concept.

If you want to make an iconic vehicle that will stand the test of time, this is very simple. Make a vehicle designed for MILITARY use and THEN adapt it for civilian sales. Proven with the Jeep, the Hummer, and the Defender... Can't create a civilian model and make it into a military vehicle... doesn't work that way...

my 2 cents... again...

Is it just me or have they lost the ability to come up with a new design on their own?

Take their new logo JLR looks like JL Audio to me...
The new CX16 can you say blatant copy of the Aston Martin DB8
It was already point out how much the DC100 resembles KIA among others.

"We have no desire to imitate our past....we will, [de, de,] design a Defender that is relevant to the 21st century...... A vehicle that recognizes it's heritage, but is firmly looking forward." - Gerry McGovern, Lead Design Director for Land Rover, at the DC100 unveiling, Frankfurt, Germany

Wait....really? No desire to imitate a 60+ year history with a vehicle that is instantly recognizable by just about anyone anywhere in the world.

Oh and Mr. McGovern goes on to say "....and of course, it has a winch."

Oh, OK, now I have to buy one......because its got a winch..........

I sincerely question whether anyone on the design team for Land Rover has ever spent anytime in a Defender using it as it is intended to be used...... I guess if I want to own a "modern" 4wheel drive utility vehicle, I'll have to stick with my Jeep. A sad day for Land Rover really.

Those long wheel base JK's look better everyday, if only they would put a diesel in it

They do, but you will have to wait 21 years to import, lol.

Then again, stranger things than 2.8L Diesel Engines have been found here.

I think their biggest mistake was that they are calling it the Defender / replacement for the Defender.

If they were to release it as just another land rover model people would accept it and see that as far as a modern Land rover goes it has some pretty interesting features compared to the rest of the current land rover lineup (minus the Defender).

Watch the following video and you can see that it has what seems to be a bulkhead behind the front seats and appears to have a modular design that can be changed to different versions such as a van, truck cab, topless and a hard top.

We as Defender owners already enjoy the benefit of having an auto that can be reconfigured to suit our particular whims but there are few modern automobiles that have the ability to be so adaptable.

Adaptable
100 wheelbase
Nice approach angle
Nice departure angle
Decent break over angle
Hopefully good for basic off-road use (look at what an LR3 can do stock)
Sounds like they will offer it with a washout style interior
Priced at the current defender price point or less

While you can never replace the Defender all in all I think it could be a nice addition to the LR lineup and would consider owning one especially if I could get a diesel, however I would keep my Defender as well

I now wish they would just sell off the Defender name to some other company and just turn Land Rover into "Range Rover"

The 1999 SVX Defender. Now *that* was an exciting design concept!

I remember, looking for different pics all over the internet, and hoping it would eventually make its way back to the states.

And so the shaping of the minds begins. Or, we're starting to market our 'positive' spin on a vehicle most everyone seems to hate.

That's Bangladesh. The license plate script is in Bengali.

And the 2011/2012 updates to the Range Rover - those new LED DRLs were from her style inputs.

This car and driver report of the dc100 hits the nail on the head. The sample of commentary from readers is entertaining and illuminating too about the reception outside our own niche community of owners.

I've already told my wife that my next truck will most likely be a nice Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. As much as I love my Rovers, my newest, the 90, is now 17 years old and I spend more time under it fixing things than on the trail. Wrenching is fun but actual wheeling without worrying about "what will break due to old age this time?" is better.

Seems it would be much cheaper to put a brand new powertrain in then buy a new vehicle. There is a limited list of old parts that wear and cause problems when you are actually talking parts collectively.

And I don't think that Defenders will ever depreciate..ever.

In all seriousness, the most recent concept and show vehicles prepared by Jeep are more "rover like" than the DC100. My case in point, the Overland JK. The JK is a comfortable, capable, and eye-pleasing update to an American four wheel drive icon. So it begs the question, if Jeep can do it, why can't Land Rover?
