hard to picture how any military force is going to want a fleet of these. The utilitarian aspects of the truck are gone. Seemingly this will bode well for the value of the older trucks...

The more I think about it the more I am liking this, just getting more people around the world saying the word "defender" is good thing. Creation of a late model lesser version will drive the value of the originals up. If Land Rover had just killed off the line altogether the defender would have started to fade away.

Maybe they will issue a press release assuring all of us that it will have shitty ass doors that will leak, an uninsulated floor will get hot while driving, an unreliable electrical system, and the ignition key goes in the wrong side of the steering column.

At least in true defender fashion the trim doesn't align:

http://www.autoblog.com/photos/land-...photo-4439901/

If they fix the freelander nose, put some leveling blocks in the front, and put some real wheels and tires on it, it's not half bad for a mall crawler.

At least it looks like it will be based on a platform available in the US...

Would like more of a roll cage where my head would not be above it, as well as a roll cage for the rear (without that stupid rear cover.)

"...and pack such innovations as an off-road terrain scanning device to detect potential obstacles and – get this – a sonar depth-sounder for fording through rivers."

Sonar, really? I'm not looking at taking this thing bass fishing!

I realize this is a concept, and like all those jeep concepts that came out prior to the remodeling of the Wranger in '07, this will wind up in a museum. But come on, you are going to design something that is going to be marketed to well-heeled soccer moms and put a depth finder in it?

To address the military application question. No miltiary in the world will buy this to fill a "HMMWV" role, i.e large utilitarian fleet that you can tailor to whatever specific role maybe required. It is just not possible. Utility takes precedence and this is severely limited in its utility. Hard to make this thing survivable against small arms and IEDs too. Too go off the subject, I think the next HMMWV replacement will look more like an MRAP(i.e v-shaped hull) than a HMMWV.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the UK's MoD already planning to go away from the Defender?

It seems like LR isn't even planning on going after the defense market anymore.

The MRAP concept will the be the mainstay of all the major western/european powers for the foreseable future, which is why the Defender and HMMVW are being replaced in those fleets in the light duty space. There is still a global 2nd/3rd world market for the Defender though in many militaries. How many shots of heavy machine guns in the back of a toyota pickup have you seen lately?

I think time will also show a need for non-armored vehicles in the military market of even the US/Europe space, once all the MRAP vehicles are deployed in low threat areas that require a rugged vehicle, as the cost of maintaining MRAP type vehicles, and the tradeoffs on utility and cargo capacity will become evident once the IED's stop.

Long term, it may be that Land Rover comes back to this market with a later generation of Defender after this next one, that goes back to the roots and utilitarian focus. The next battle may be lost, but that doesn't mean the game is over. Jeep didn't stay with square headlights for long...I have hope/faith that Land Rover will find it's roots!

Convertible Murano

This looks like it has the structural integrity of a plastic fork. I'm sure all that plastic will look great after a few years!

Why would Tata go after military applications with an upmarket land rover when it can just market and sell its own line of tactical vehicles to govts and aid organizations?

What's up with these tires? For some reason it reminds me of Tron. Where can I get them?

MRAPs won't replace the Defender and HMMVW, the JLTVs will. That's a market LR could try for in the ROW. Tata's current military lineup would benefit from it.

Forget about anything remotely Defender like in the future for the USA. Between crash test and other DOT requirements, the EPA, and current automotive styling, it just won't happen.

So how much do you think the Defender techno rubber with integrated select-o-matic ice studs will go for at Discount Tire?

Is there any patent infringement with Bond's Aston Marton ice palace Q special? Would MI6 enforce patents?

As for the sonar, they plan on putting the engine ECU under the oil drain pan to keep it cool and out of the way of the glove box, so it's important to know when the streets flood how deep the water is. When it gets loafer deep, an alarm goes off. When it gets pant cuff deep the engine shuts down into protective mode.

I love how in MSN Auto's review of the DC100 they sum it up and say "MSN Autos' verdict: Lovers of the current Defender need to call Land Rover and make their voices heard."

Just to throw my 0.02 in...I wonder why they didn't keep the iconic front of the Defender in the concept car. Usually these concepts have one or two 'defining characteristics' that evoke the vehicle it's replacing. Along with all the other criticism, I don't like that I can't SEE a Defender in this truck.
