Fridge Question

I've been thinking of buying a fridge for camping.

Is this any good?

Bobeck had one up until Joel fixed him up with a better one. There's also a long thread on them on Expedition Portal

I've been pretty happy with the Ironman I got from Tony, same compressor/guts as the ARB I believe.

I've got one, I've had no problems other than when it ran my battery flat keeping my beer cold when I broke down near Monument Valley. The main thing though is that it kept my beer cold for several days in mid 90's temps while I waited for British Pacific to send me an alternator, so I didn't mind having to jump start it.

------ Follow up post added January 9th, 2013 08:51 PM ------

Oh and you don't have to pay that much for one. I got a 63qt "scratch and dent" for less than $350 shipped, and I couldn't tell it from new. Since then I've beat it up a bit.

I had one as Doug said. The cord is not as robust as the one that came with the ARB and is ridiculously expensive to replace. The side-opening was not ideal for me. The placement of the temp readout was not ideal for my setup. The handles are flimsy. The latch does not provide any compression. It is bulky for the available space inside. The ARB has a light, this one does not. So, for me, the ARB fixed all those problems and is easier to carry and tie down, plus is a few inches narrower which makes a big difference in the back of a 90.

Except for the time the fuse blew (why, still don't know, fixed with tin-foil)) and the fact that the cord plug broke (still works, but now possible to plug in the wrong way) it worked fine at keeping my food and beer cold. I don't see myself ever going back to a cooler for any multi-day trips. Winter Romp, great event- no cooler or fridge required.

I have the Norcold/Engel 60 and an Engel 15, and they rock. Can't imagine camping without it. We also use the 60 for going to the grocery store in the Hotlanta summer heat.

Gus, I have the Engel, Edgestar, and Ironman.
My Engel is a workhorse. Chapman and I got a deal on them together about 10 years ago. We use it all the time. rarely goes more than a few weeks without being used.

Got an Edgestar 43 about 4 years ago. OK for the money---I paid $399 and FREE shipping when Compact Appliance ran one of their specials. Not the most consistent temp control on DC power but pretty good on AC when plugged in the garage. Broke the fridge-end of the cord and had to buy a new one...$50. Ouch.

Got the Ironman 40L at Conclave from Justin as you may recall.
I've been using that one more since September and it seems pretty good so far. Nice to have the LED inside as well.
