Fiberglass Hard Top

Anyone in So Cal have a fierglass top that I could borrow for a week or two? I am looking into the feasability of making an exact replica out of aluminum thus creating a removable aluminum hard top for all us D-90ST owners out there.

I need to take it to my shop and have the guys check it out in detail and see if this is feasable or not.

If the project goes through I would certainly give one to the person who loans me the fiberglass top at cost.

If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I am very serious about this as I think there is enough of a market out there and more importantly I want a removable aluminum top for my D-90.

Thanks,

Joe

I am assuming you have looked into this as well. What did you find out that makes you say that it is not feasible.

Having put one on and taking it off, I know it needs to bend quit a bit, you could try but you may end up creasing the top during instalation. If you were closer I would let you see what happens when you take off a fiberglass top. It may work but you may have to make some modifcations from the original to get it to work.

A removable aluminum top would be great. The bending issue, mentioned by Mike, might be something to address. Installing the top is somewhat of an art, as one must contort the main piece when clearing the roll bar and tucking into the front by the window. I've always wondered, though, if a better made top might eliminate some of this work.

The aspect I hate most about the fiberglass is how easily the top is damaged. Normal on and off routines, exercised with caution, still cause cracking. Also, my liftgate area has numerous hairline cracks from fatigue. All in all it seems to be very fragile.

Is it not possible to re-work an existing aluminum top to clear the interal/external bar located above and behind the front seats? Surely something could be made.

I have a damaged hard top in my garage that I am willing to let you borrow for a few weeks. One of the side pieces is broken and the top piece is broken and cracked (the joys of shipping). I am located in SD.

Justin,

Deal. PM me or give me a call and lets make the arrangements. I won't need it very long - maybe a week or two at the most.

I will give you a call. Unfortunately, Fedex just rejected the damage claim so I may have to hold onto it for a little longer.
