Question FEELER: SG skid plates for steering guard (Safari Gard)

Had to pull my winch off this week to rebuild (after it crapped out at the ROAV Wintergreen run this past weekend winching 2 trucks down a steep grade). Anyhow, to do so had to drop my skid plate on the SG bumper to get access to the underneath bolts...at which point I realized it was bashed to hell.

Anyhow, now is the time to replace mine...and I wanted to see if there are any other folks out there that may be in need as well. It *looks* like I can get about 9-10 out of a sheet based on my calculations. If there's interest I'll do a batch...or more if necessary. If not, I'll probably just do one for my truck and be done with it.

Would be plasma cut from 3/16" 6061 aluminum, with drilled mounting holes countersunk for the 5/16"-18 Flat Allen Head Screw (similar hardware that came with it originally). Will include new mounting hardware, likely in 304 Stainless Steel....I can't see any reason not to do stainless on these as it's technically not a load bearing application (the hardware is just used to bolt the plate to the tubular steering guard).

Anyhow, here's the pic of the skid plate in question:

I'm waiting on sheet material pricing for the 3/16 6061, once I have that I'll at least have a ballpark idea. I'll keep you posted, but I don't expect the cost to be in the stratosphere or anything.

Follow up question...do you at least have the sub-frame for the skid plate to mount to? Seen below:

Essentially this is just for the aluminum plate...the entire tubular bracket would be a fabrication job, and I'm not sure Lelo Fab is up for it .

JE-ZUS! Well, we can upgrade you .

But that brings up a good point, this *should* fit the D1 SG bumpers too I believe...though I'd want to test-fit to be sure.

Have you taken the winch apart yet?

I'm interested to see what the culprit was...

On the bench...no visible signs of issues, *except* maybe that the internal brake / brake pads had shifted out of position. One corner of a pad was a little cracked, but that shouldn't be an issue. And everything is a little dry, but surprisingly clean...ordered up some AeroShell 33 grease to clean & regrease it, then will reassemble and test. But no major failure from what I can see. Odd.

I bet it was the way we were using it that caused it to get off center and start making that lovely sound of music. I recall reading wenches don't like to be pulled. Looked like Matthew was moving at a pretty fast clip when the line snugged up.

Ok, finally was able to put some materials pricing on this...essentially *still* gauging interest for any pre-orders to see if this is viable to actually make a "batch" of them for folks. A batch would likely be (10) or so, and interest would have to be in the 5-6 total range to proceed (and obviously I'd take 1 of those!).

Units would also include the exact same replica mounting hardware, but in Stainless 316 (the 6x Flat-Head Socket Cap Screws, nuts, and lock washers).

Cost for the "pre-run" would be $100/ea, with the unit price going up to $125 for the masses after the run is complete.

That said, let me know who may be interested/etc.

PS - based on the measurements provided, these skid plates *should* fit the SG D1 bumper as well (as long as it has the "mounting bracket" already in place).

I'm still dailing-in some differences/nuances on these. Seems *possible* that there are different mounting point configurations for the top side/lip - for example, mine - which I suspect is a very early one - has a 2-hole mount. Some others I now realize have a 3-hole mount (see below).

Also, I strongly suspect that these were all done by hand...I'm seeing great variances in the outside radius of the curve along the bottom edge (ie. differences from left to right). As far as I can tell it should be symmetrical (but is not...which I actually don't think it due to my bashing of said unit, but could be). I used a 6" radius to come up with a template and it seems pretty spot-on.

Anyhow, on to my real questions - which have to do with overall dimensions. From left-to right at the top edge (point-to-point) I'm getting about 31-3/8". Top-to-bottom overall I'm looking at ~11-1/2", but I strongly suspect that things have been "ground away" over the years...to the tune of 1/4" to 1/2" (so possibly original was 11-3/4" to 12").

I'd also like to get an idea of how long the true "flat" part of the bottom is before it gets to the radius of the curvature and starts to go up to the side. I'm currently *guessing* somewhere in the the 10" to 11-1/4", but because of the condition of mine it's a bit tough to say. Judging from the tubular frame, seems to be about 11" so I'm pretty comfortable going with that (but couldn't hurt to verify on a "nicer" unit if possible).

Lastly, there is "overhang" on the sides (approximately 1/2"), but appears to be no overhang at the back....OR mine has been ground away by years of abuse . I'd lean towards creating a little bit of an overhang in the back, or at least bring it flush...in which case we'd be looking at around 11-3/4" at least.

SO....all that said, I think best approach is to verify with someone that has a pristine version to see about some of these dimensional questions:
  • How many mounting holes along the top edge?
  • Verification of overall dimensions.
  • Overhang amount on sides?
  • Overhang amount on back?
