Factory Works Defender V8

Land Rover is re-engineering up to 150 Defenders with V8 engines, to celebrate the model’s 70th birthday.
The 5.0-litre V8 Defender will be the most powerful and fastest yet made, with the 90in wheelbase model hitting 60mph from rest in 5.6sec.

The Defender Works V8 will produce 399bhp and 380lb ft, while the standard Defender made just 120bhp and 266lb ft.

Land Rover said it pays homage to early high-powered engines such as the Series III Stage V8 and the 50th Anniversary Edition. The Defender Works V8 is the first official V8 Defender to be launched since 1998.

They are doing a pretty decent job at building up the hype. Seems a little odd though. I get the putting power in them, presumably the new one will be more powerful. But then putting them in the old platform, if they are not going going to look a little alike, has me confused.

Anyway, cool idea. Too bad they won't be available here, I wouldn't think.

Somebody at JLR/Tata has been watching ECD, ECR, Safari, Matzger, and others make crazy money on LS powered trucks, it would seem.

Wouldn't it be nice if they were just saying it will be totally different... and then it looks like the new G vs the old G-wagen! Oh well.

Are there any known-to-be-legit aftermarket Rover engines claiming 399bhp and 380lb ft?

Or anyone heard anything good or bad about Toddco's 5.0 lately?

Factory Works Defender V8

It is one of their current model engines. You can see it in the video. Looks like it is the same 5.0 V8 from the Range Rover. 370 hp in the RR.

Looks like good marketing. Keep interest up until the next gen arrives. If they were smart the would reopen special vehicles and offer small runs. That would be a total cash cow.

My LR contact told me about V8 Defenders knocking around Solihull long before the last special editions were announced in 2016. Given that the Defender line has already been dismantled and is already history at Solihull, I suspect these are new/old stock they've been holding back especially for a 2018 70th launch.
FWIW. Bowler did the re-engineering to get the V8 auto into the Defender.

Isn't special vehicles technically still open with their classics they are re-building? Just a different name.

Land Rover already verified that they are buying used vehicles and restomoding them. It is in the other thread. The work is being done by "Land Rover Classics".

Here's the official page for it. I think it's rad they are doing this. Nice to see them celebrating the anniversary with the old one and not the new one.

Oh, a little more info here. Thanks
