Yeah those folks on Lake Norman think the sky is so pretty in the evening when the sun hits the cooling tower exhaust...of course the likely hood of anything happening is small...but you never know.

The Indian Point Nuclear Generating (Buchanan, New York) one would probably be an issue. 18 million people living within the 50-mile radiation zone - that's 3x more than I think the next-highest concentration.

I'm 50 miles outside the 50 mile ring. That said, both of the plants in Virginia had emergency shut downs in 2011. 1 for a tornado, the other for an earthquake.

Yeah- my water comes from 3 deep wells on the property and prevailing winds are from the west so fairly safe.

My local issue is that all nuclear fuel for our US nuclear fleet is manufactured @ The Mt Athos Nuclear Power Generation plant about 15 miles away. So plenty of fuel grade uranium running up and down local highways.

During the cold war we were constantly drilling in school for potential nuclear strikes as we were told that plant was a "top 10 target". Not sure how true that is, but it was scary crap as a kid to hear that siren.
Oh and dad worked there as a nuclear engineer....

I've been planning on adding a family supply of potassium iodide to my comprehensive first aid kit in my D for some time now. I'm already bugout ready as it is. prevailing winds would dictate my direction of evacuation. i have not plans to tough it out in fallout zone.
