EPA and VW diesels - 'dyno' and 'road' modes

VW's tricky engineering to circumvent the rules got caught by the EPA.
This is going to leave a mark:

You still have to love VW's commercial on diesel engine in question:

Unbelievable! I obviously don't think there is a German equivalent for "Chutzpah," but it would definitely apply!

If this is true we have reached a new low in screwing consumers and corporate skirting of the law. One can only guess that if you own one in CA it will no longer be legal to drive till they devise a plan to reprogram the engines.

My only question is... Who thought this was a smart idea and checked off on it?? But i am surprised about how long it took anyone to catch on to it though!

The Golf diesel was in my springtime car buying shortlist. Together with Ford Hybrids. Maybe the short list needs pruning. I suspect VW tuned the Ecu to spot wheel speed differential where rears were doing zero mph and triggered a change in tuning. Could this explain why on the road mpg with VW tdi is so much higher that EPA MPG?

Whose to say that VW didn't do the same in Europe?

This could be a massive dent in VW fortunes.

I'm not too happy right now, these things hold their value well which was part of why we bought it along with the mpg, 'green' factor and enjoyability driving. The value thing just shit the bed along with the green, waiting to see if the recall screws over the other 2 items. There's a shit load of class action lawyers getting excited right now.

Looks like my JSW will never go to a dealership again! That fact might help resale.

In all seriousness, each year the CARB/EPA's fleet of bizjets takes flight they hurt the environment more than the lifespan of these vehicles.

These people are similar to the people that seized all the 90s and 110s.

I'll go don my tinfoil hat and hope they don't find me and my evil VW.

Seriously! I mean unless you use the dealer for anything or live where diesel emissions are checked, how are they going to force people to make that adjustment to their cars?

I don't have a VW. But if I did, I'm thankful I live where diesels aren't checked.

Does VAG will have to buy back all these vehicles?

Research the history of this. It's nothing new. Car manufactures have been tweaking software, and manipulating and skirting emissions laws for years.

This is true. Back in the late 90s Honda got in trouble for "hiding" misfire codes by supposedly not turning the check engine light on with a low enough threshold.

Funny - I used to stress so much about my "tuned" Audi 1.8T that I would swap in a stock ECU for when it went to the dealer.

My first thought when reading it was there would be a bunch of cheap VW diesels for us to potentially pop into our Defenders but sounds like it can just be a software update.
