Just read an article on this, only NJ and California have these laws on the books, and even then the only reason a state would exercise this right is if customer adoption was extremely low. Essentially there is almost no way to do this since most states do not perform emissions tests on diesels to begin with

Yup, but haven't had it inspected yet, since at the end of the month, inspections will no longer be required.

Tomorrow VW doomsday with all the reports pointing to VW buying back every single Tdi or 500,000 units that I suppose you can say shouldn't have been here in the first place.....

They ran out of time to get any other fix.

500,000 times say $20,000 each, is a shit load of money. Whether VW will be allowed to export the vehicles it buys for resale in South America is another thing. Otherwise they are going to have a massive car crushing party.

From what I've read it'll likely be a mix of the two. Perhaps the ~$5k and you must get the fix, or the buy back option, which I can only assume will be fairly generous especially if it's toward another VW. I honestly love this little car and have been surprisingly impressed by it; plus it's loaded with nav, "leather", sunroof, etc.

Has anyone bought one privately lately? My sister in law's bf had put his up for private sale a week before the "scandal" broke because he was moving to NYC, and since then has moved it over to consignment where it's just sat.

VW is going to offer the options of $5,000 and the fix or a buy back.

Owners of emissions-cheating Volkswagens can choose buybacks or repairs, judge says - LA Times

I wonder..... Does buy back mean what I paid for it or what it's worth now?

Out of curiosity, is VW paying everyone who currently owns a Dieselgate VW (even those bought secondhand), or just those people who bought a Dieselgate VW brand new and are still in possession of it?

My feelings right now are that I could live with that. I think I could also live with the $5000 and keeping the car, I think.

VW has not stated at all what they are doing. It is all rumours.

I think the 3.0L TDi vehicles are still TBD in terms of settlement. Unless someone has heard otherwise....

The 3.0 liter vehicles are fixable (as are the 2.0 cars with DEF) the 2.0 without DEF in my modestly educated opinion are not fixable absent significant changes (adding DEF) which would be cost prohibitive. The ones that have DEF don't test much higher than the limits.

If they do a buyback at KBB excellent as of Sept 2015 or give you $5k contingent on the fix, I think I will take the buyback, although it is a tough call because $5k will get me the Malone I want. If they just want to give me $5k and let me keep it as is, I think I will keep it.

Still waiting on details like everyone else obviously, but I can't see a bad outcome for consumers here.

I'm thinking there is a trade here .... buy up a load of beater VW and collect payouts ... salvage titles etc etc ...

In 1991 a DC judge, under DC's lemon laws, awarded me full purchase price, plus taxes and maintenance costs for a Jetta GLI. This was 18 months after I'd first purchased it. I took the check and went to another dealership, bought a GTI 2.0 16V and used the excess cash to payoff student loans.

It's not just VW: Every diesel road-tested in the U.K. fails emissions tests

Quote:
On average, road-tested vehicles emitted five times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide, with some pumping out as much as 12 times the maximum allowed. None passed the DfT's tests.

The bad news--at least for automakers--is that the U.K. government is in the process of implementing new, real-world emissions tests for new cars. Those tests are expected to roll out next year.
That will spell the end of new diesel cars.
