Because the general population is brain washed.

Dealerships are still spooked about discussing the issue. Took my 09 Jetta in for an oil change last week and the service rep muttered something about "not another diesel." When I asked what the deal was with the whole issue he told me he wasn't allowed to talk about it. So I immediately went home and applied for my VW $1000.00 gift cards. Doesn't bother me too much. Plan on keeping the car for a while anyway. They will eventually offer a fix and depending on what the fix is will depend on whether or not I participate. I bought the car for mileage and diesel performance. The term "clean diesel" is pretty funny to me.....

People think VW is going to buy back their cars. Hilarious. All these folks crying about how awful their diesels are now that they "know" they pollute just a little more than what they were told are ridiculous. Only ones I feel bad for are the ones upside down in value if they owe the bank.
People bought these because they were thinking of the environment? Kiss my ass. They wanted good gas mileage.

Possible solution:

1 - VW pulls diesels out of unhappy customers' cars and replaces with clean gasser motors.
2 - VW gives them to old dirty diesel owners that want to upgrade their powerplant.
3 - VW starts an ad campaign saying they aren't the cleanest diesels right now but they are a lot better for the environment than the ones from the 70s, 80s, and 90's. And they are going to recycle/reuse the newer engines.
4 - RDavis designs a kit for the VW diesel to work with an R380 and 2.5NA (aka Bug Zapper) frame mounts :

VW dealers have been selling TDIs to themselves then selling them as used.
That's one way to play the numbers...

A friend lent me her Jetta Tdi over Thanksgiving and I drove over 700 interstate miles round trip and got right at 42 mpg running just under 80. I was impressed.
