Confusing cause earlier on I'd read the EPA does not test vehicles (insufficient funding to execute their own regulations) but instead requires the manufacturer to perform their own testing and submit the results. I guess with such a trusting government they will be forgiving as well. So I wonder what the whole point is at the end of the day? Chaos and disruption? Unbelievable to me how lost and seemingly inept our society is.

Many owners won't want to compliance upgrade, I know some people who never go to the dealer and others who live hundreds of miles from a dealership, some don't even know there's an issue. One guy I know is looking for a OBDII cover that locks to prevent the dealer from hooking up to it without his knowledge. Short of DMV records, VW probably has no idea where some vehicle are located.

Tdi owners will probably be forced into a compliance upgrade by denying the vehicles to be re-registered in their respective state when their plates tags expire after a certain date in the future such as January 20XX. You can be sure CARB will force this on California registrants.

The worse is trailing 12A and 13B rotaries on the track. Most (all?) mix oil with the gas to keep them from grenadeing. Smells (and sounds) like you are following a weed eater on roids. Thankfully they are easy to pass.

I hate these auto blog posts about people who are doing comparisons between "dyno mode" and "normal mode". None of these folks actually know how the defeat mechanism actually works. The only thing they have are guesses. They are all basically putting the car into some bizarre degraded operating mode by disconnecting wheel sensors or using a FWD dyno with TC off and strange pedal/switch combos.

The worst part: All of these tests are looking at "normal" hp/tq numbers and comparing them to hp/tq numbers while operating in some kooky degraded mode. NONE of these tests actually have sniffers on them looking at emissions. Of course an engine is going to show different power numbers when being operated in a degraded mode.

When is someone going to perform a test that actually matters?

The EPA is an over-reach organization that is forever changing their "rules".
Rules are not laws !

Only $1k gift card!?!?!

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/10/bu...ners.html?_r=0

At least there's this

"Car owners who accept the offer will not be asked to waive future rights to sue or claim other compensation, according to a Volkswagen spokeswoman."

I'd take it. It's probably more than I'd get on a class action after all of the court costs and legal fees.

And honestly the only thing that makes me mad at VW is that they admitted to it as if they did something wrong, instead of just saying they built the car to pass the emissions testing as required. Them feeding up to it, first among the automakers, give them a bigger black eye.

I didn't buy the car to sell any time soon, so I wasn't really concerned about how fast it would depreciate, but I also didn't expect a news article to kill the value either.

I have locked down my OBD II port.

Looking forward to rolling coal with a Malone tune and a straight pipe once my extended warranty is up.

screw the EPA.

Yeah, went to refi mine the other day, took almost a 25% hit in NADA since the scandal broke.

Shit got real, I will take my $1000, they can do the DSG swap and the oil change, or maybe I will buy some tires... either or.

I'll probably wait until I have to replace the DPF, but then I'll do the same.

I just can't understand how it affects value. Why do people buying the car use care if it is worse for the environment...? The person you're buying it from just bought a new vehicle, which is 20x worse than just keeping theirs running.
