Ebay Defender 110 in Chicago

Hi all,

I've been searching around for a 110 and see this one posted on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PROFE...item35ab2a7da4

I believe I saw this same care on MSN autos a year or two back: same color, hard top, in the Chicago area, except it was about half the price of the "Buy It Now" price on Ebay. Of course back then I wasn't in a position to buy one. Anyone familiar with this 110? If the "1965" model year claim isn't a red flag, it definitely seems to be a pink one.

Thanks,
Michael

It is not a 1965, by any stretch of the imagination. It looks like a MOD (Ministry of Defense) truck that has been touched up. IMO, if you are looking to spend that much, contact Doug Crowther (130TDI) and have him help you import a great truck.

Meticulously inspected - right!!!

Lots of corrosion - the Ebay auction says its a 6-cylinder - this guy really knows his truck

I'd stay far, far away from this one - feel sorry for the sucker who winds up with it.

So the consensus seems to be "run away!" - thanks! I've been keeping an eye out for a two door 110, something to replace my aging Scrambler: two- or three-door, can switch between full, half (pick-up), and bikini top in a few hours. Preferably a diesel, preferably a manual, and LHD (or easily convertible to LHD). Body condition's not too important, just mostly rust-free - it'll be used as a pickup truck frequently, and I would expect it to be able to carry at least 1300 lbs of various loose materials (gravel, mulch, etc...) in the bed. Ideally be able to safely tow 4,000 lbs (trailer + 2,000 lb car).

And be able to get most maintenance & repair parts without waiting a month. I think this is my biggest concern.

I think 'run-away' is kind of an extreme reaction.

I don't know the seller or the truck, but if you follow the link to the restoration company, you find the below photo. Appears that it does have coils. He also says it was "restored/created"

I agree, probably a MOD surplus. Probably rebadged as a '65 for DOT purposes. And it is not quite a 110. In fact the photo's filename below was "Defender 109"

But I would say it's gone through a fairly comprehensive restoration if you look at the before/after photos:

No skin in this game, but I think there's a difference between buying a 110 off the boat from the UK and buying this truck. All depends on what you want in a truck. Authenticity and heritage or whatever this one has

Jerod - I'm not much interested in authenticity, just as long as I can identify and buy parts. Thanks for the perspective.

I noticed that there were no bids. Since I'm heading up north next week anyway, I'll try contacting the seller to see if I can at least kick the tires. Is there a "Things you should look for when buying a Defender" thread out there aimed at Defender newbies? I know what to look for in the CJ line pretty well and do nearly all work on it myself, but I have no experience with Land Rovers and some of the common (and possibly hidden) problems they may have.

Michael,

Search is your best friend. There are no shortage of threads in the technical forum about what to look for in a Defender. Mine sort of landed in my lap, so I didn't have the opportunity to do a lot of "pre-purchase inspection" sort of stuff.

From my standpoint, #1 to look for is rust. And judging by the restoration on that thing, rust is not an issue. I would also consider value/resale (but others might disagree, as you may never sell it) but you will certainly find a better investment in a North America Spec (NAS) Defender versus a grey-market or rebuild like this one. Limited number of documented vehicles imported = higher value.

Other than that, I would really dig through this site, and if you have specific questions you can't find answers to, ask. I've been pleasantly surprised by the speed, perspective, accuracy, and creative thinking that have come as answers to my questions.

Good luck,

Jerod

Also, spend a bunch of time on ECR's site, www.eastcoastrover.com to see how they have restored trucks too.
