Saw the story and thought they went real easy on Sheikh Mo...especially the part about replacing the camel jockeys with robots. They made it sound like he was an innovator when in fact he exploited 100s if not 1000s of kids from SE Asia. Its now the subject of an international suit filed by a US law firm on behalf of those kids under the Alien Tort law. Everyone I know who has been loves it but it sounds like a place born out of corruption and lack of long term vision. It doesn't seem like they are concerned at all about the environmental effects of developing the area at all.

what environment? it's just a pile of sand there... while i don't know anything about the above issue of child labor etc, i have to give kudos for dubai in breaking the middle eastern mold and actually spending its oil money on building a viable future for it's citizens... they've already made it a great vacation spot, would you vacation anywhere else in the middle east? i wouldn't...

I too have been curious and interested in Dubai. It seems to me though that any US citizen traveling in the middle east is asking for trouble. Is it safe to travel there?

I think that the US is/was one of the worst offenders when it comes to the environment. As for child labor... Have you ever bought something made in china? Or should I say Wal-Mart/ K-Mart???
I am not defending any country, or their leader.
I think that Dubai may be a place of short-term growth. I am thinking to taking a trip there just to check things out.

What do you hosers think a-boot it ehh?

I definately want to go, my best friend from growing up and college works for a large financial institution over there and in Bahrain. He's called it a hybrid of Las Vegas and New York. I plan to visit sometime in the spring as well. I was merely commenting on the fact that 60 minutes didn't challenge the rapid growth or the other ehtical issues that come with this. I think our nation is a perfect example of the terrible effects of short term growth and development. Additionally they weren't engaged in child labor but child slavery/exploitation...

I haven't been there yet but have read a good bit about the place since I've been kicking around applying for an EMS job there. The major drawback is that its crazy expensive to visit. Its probably one of the safest places for Western tourists to visit. The economy is changing because the oil money will run out by about 20-sometime soon sorry I forget the date they mention. So they are trying to make them selves into a tourist/ financial destination. Besides I'd love to live on the World they are building.
