driving without plates

In April or May I have to pick up a Land Rover in VA and plan on to driving home. It doesn't have an US registration yet.

Here in MI you can drive a car home without plates just after you bought it as long as you have insurance and take the direct way home.

Anybody knows if this is the case in all states ? should I check this per state or are there other ways to do this ?

Of course I can have it shipped but I just want to make this trip.

Not the case in VA. I have the ticket to prove it. Drove about 10 miles before I got it. It's a fix-it ticket, but why aggravate the police if you can help it?

Pro tip: Put something - even the original UK plates on the truck.

That would be great, Thanks Doug.

In Oregon, you get a "trip permit" from the DMV or a dealer; stick it in your rear window. YMMV in other states

Ha ! Pretty sure a heavy footed dutchman could get into Ohio in 3-4 hrs, even in a 9000 lb Defender 6x6.

Not saying I never do it but I was told driving without plates is considered a (small) violation. Driving with the wrong plates is considered a misdemeanor ..

Thatís common practice in Texas where you have to drive to the inspection station and pass before you can transfer title and register the vehicle.

On the money. My father is a retired PO. When I had to do things like this, he said you are better off just driving it with insurance and put a piece of paper in the back window that says "IN TRANSIT" they can still write you if they want, but putting the plates from another vehicle is a misdemeanor instead of a violation.

Be sure & read the fine print on those permits - may not be valid for use outside of the state where issued, may only be valid for legal residents of state where issued, etc. An Arizona hwy patrolman once claimed that he could throw me in jail bc my temps were expired, so I'm personally a lil gunshy of anything like a "no plates" scenario. Some pre-registration travel scenarios are simply impossible to pull off without rolling some dice. Unbelievably, they're not necessarily in biz to facilitate rich white guys' various automotive fetishes...

I'm retired police, without proper tags here's the violations:

*Unregistered
*Failure to display proper regulation plates as required.
*Failure to provide registration card upon demand.
*If no insurance, add that in also.

If you put another plate on from a different vehicle, add the following :

*Improper display of registration plates
*Falsified registration
*Displaying registration issued to another vehicle.

The plates will be seized and there's a pretty good chance the vehicle will be towed.

VA State police are very serious about violations. Do it the right way with some type of transport or temp plate.

You could get away with just a warning but it's it worth the chance?

If you drive without plates make sure you throw the empty beer cans out the window.
