Wow, this thread got long while I was on my boat (submarine).

Zack got back to me and I placed my order.

Begin rant mode.

I don't want to get all philosophical, and don't know why every business that has a Mil/Police/Fire/EMT/etc... discount does it, but I appreciate when companies do offer one.

Could be that some owners are prior Mil/Police/Fire/EMT/etc... and want to help out their former brother and sisters. Could be that some owners are just thankful that someone is out there going out to sea, or trudging up some damn hill. Could be that some owners know that for some of us serving as military professionals could be making much more money in the civilian world, but we don't because we love our jobs and want to continue serving our country (and the citizens that make up our country). Could be any other reason they want.

That being said, is someone on this board going to turn down a discount for being a "Defender Source" member, or a local LR club member? I think not.

Secure from rant mode.

Wait...I get get CAC-carded all the time for work. Does this rule only apply to non-government / non-commercial contracting businesses?

Does it only apply to McDonalds and Burger King or does it broadly apply to any US institution?

I understand that it's illegal to copy CAC-cards (Title 18, US Code, Part I, Chapter 33, Section 701), but to simply ask for identification? What's the law? Is this true??? If so, what's the statute?

I wasn't clear enough. It's illegal to scan or ask for a scan of a CAC card. It's not illegal to ask to show CAC card.

Still waiting for somebody to make a D Source coin?
BTW I stopped in at NAPA today (10% off with a AAA card) and it is definitely starting to feel like fall.

I think he means that it's illegal for a business to ask to take a photocopy of your CAC or HSPD-12 PIV. Both are acceptable as proof of identification at government facilities that use the same type of card (and generally can be used for TSA pre-check cred or base access), but can't be used for positive ID in lieu of a DL (say if you're getting pulled over).

Sweet! That means some stations by now should be offering Pumpkin Spice diesel. What a lovely, aromatic fall fog I'll be sharing with my neighbors soon!

Ahh, thanks. I get it now - it makes sense when applied to a mail order business verifying military ids. I guess short of using a SCRA single order for LES (do you really want a mail order auto parts business to know your ssid and how much you get paid?) The honor system is the most efficient.

There must be a simpler method for authentication that online businesses can use...

Agree. I was actually just talking to L8 about other ways to verify service. There aren't many options.

You can sanitize an LES pretty well. Of course the best verification is to send a picture of the back window of your pickup truck. Many people post their entire military personnel file there...
