DefenderSource.com Announcement

I just wanted to start this post so you all could ask me questions about the announcement I just posted to move the site over to DefenderSource.com.

I am sure there will be lots of opinions regarding this, it was not a decision that was taken lightly. I can assure you all it will help us rank better in the search engines which will ultimately help new Defender owners find us. No more being stuck mixed in with the Nikon folks when searching to get to D 90. It's also the fairest domain name to be inclusive for 90 and 110 owners.

Special thanks to NomaD110 for donating the domain name.

Please post any questions and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

Just curious. When you say:

you mean that any posts in Thread A that have a link to Thread B (for example when the topic has been discussed previously), that the domain in that post will be automatically updated from d-90.com to defendersource.com so that the linking still works?

Hmm is Nikon's lawyers pushing you guys out?

I've seen that happen on other forums and then all of a sudden your favorite place on the Internet is sucked into the vortex known as Autoguide

Opps, that's left over from testing the move out (which we did yesterday. I just changed a folder name to break the system until Jeff can remove that old test data. It should just site blank and empty until we do the actual move. Once we do the move, basically D-90.com = DefenderSource.com. We'll have to scan through all the old posts and update them and update as many links that we have control over. All old links will be 301 redirected which is just a fancy name for a redirect that tells the search engines that the old page is now located at a new page.

Nope. They never contacted us. It's just if you do a search for "D 90" it's going to be impossible for us to rank higher then all the Nikon D 90 content.

Nope, this has nothing to do with AutoGuide/Vertical Scope. Just a change that I think positions us to rank better and provide a more inclusive name for the non-90 owners.

I like the broader coverage of defendersource anyway, as 110 owner. whatever works!

Sure, $1 million Dollars

Seriously though, D-90.com will just point to the new domain name so it's fine to just keep calling the site D90. Other then having to login again, it will be totally seamless.

Question, and it is really a question, not a suggestion or criticism, why not run the two as mirror sites? I frequent one site where it has two domain names with idenitical content. You post on the BBS on one, it shows up on both. It would fix the dead link issues.

The reason is Google's algorithm has a function called "duplicate content penalty" so there would be risk in running the site on multiple domain names at the same time. I think it would also create further confusion to users in the long run.

At some point well have a new content management system powering the home page. I thought about having only 90 focused content and blog on D-90.com and reached out to the guy who owns D-110.com to put a 110 focused blog and content there. After thinking about it for a while, that just makes it more confusing and I think it's best we have everything together.

As I said before, ALL the old links will still work, the site will remain exactly the same but you will be required to login again.

I'm in support. While I enjoy and want a 90, I also am leaning toward a 110. If it were not for both owner types on this site, I would not even have considered a 110.

Curse all you 110 owners!

I've been saving for a 90, and now I will have to probably save longer for a 110.

How about our grandfathered in status of being able to block ads? Will that change?

I think its a good move. The site is a place for all defender owners already, so the name change actually fits better IMO.

I like the new domain name too, as a 90 turned into a 110 owner...

We should have planned to do the domain change on April 1st and then make a post that since it's a new website, the grandfather status is gone! Just kidding or course. Your grandfather status will remain the same on the new domain name.

Just an FYI - the domain name change is done.

If you tried to connect from your smart phone while the site was down, it might have shown some issues. Sometimes the smart phone apps won't properly reset and connect until you reboot your smart phone. So if you are having issues with the app, please reboot your device and try again.
