Defenders in the Balkans

Well I recently found out I'll be part of the first active duty contingent to deploy to Kosovo for the first time in something like 10 years -- leaving for just under a year in a few months. We are ramping up for the unique mission and learning as much as we can -- so of course I'm doing my own "personal development" research and trying to figure out if I'll get much Defender love when I'm there... I came across some cool videos linked below. Unfortunately I'll be on staff the whole time so 'adventures' like those in the videos won't be witnessed by me. However I do hope to spend some time with foreign military mechanics and maybe even bring home some random foreign military Defender odds and ends on trade. Anyone been? Any Balkan Defender experience here?

There are some really cool rover events in that part of the world that I have seen on youtube and read in the mags.

My sentiments exactly. Very happy to not be going back to the middle east -- it gets old super fast.

My two times through Kosovo I never once saw a Defender, but that was 10 years ago now.

Really?? I was there 10 years ago and saw Defenders all the time, but I was in the British army sector around Pristina. Saw nice 110 Wolf military Defenders almost every day.

Dang. Had no idea we were still on Kosovo. Have cuz going back to Afganistan again for the umpteenth time. Special Forces folks can't stand being away from the action.

Well, first time doesn't count as we were the first troops on the ground, so there really wasn't much going on.

Second time was down in the southeast on the FYROM border. Stunningly beautiful, but just Marines around so no Wolfs.

Yup, we are still in Kosovo... one of the real choice deployments but pretty much relegated to the Guard these days as not much is going on.

I was the Multinational Task Force East CSM there in 2011. We didn't have any Defenders in our Task Force, but there were many in some of the BN sized elements. The Carabinieri had a ton of them. There were a few out in the hands of civilians as well. There is a pretty decent Land Rover repair shop out on the back way to Pristina and I'd stop there once in a while to chat with the mechanics and check out some of the POVs in their lot.

I'm attaching a pic of one of the Defenders that would show up in our DFAC parking lot on special meal days and some pics of Polish Honkers which were very Defender looking. We had a Polish Maneuver Company in my BDE and these things were all over Camp Bondsteel.
