Defenders and other suvs in Azores

Just spent an amazing 2 weeks on the island of Faial in the Azores (Portugal) Never saw so many wonderful Defenders..110s, 90s, pick ups etc and all in great condition. Also saw a few really well kept Toyota Land Cruisers and 2 interesting looking vehicles called Alters (green and blue in photos), not sure what they are or where from but will post the pics as well as the Defenders.
Lovely islands by the way kind of a mix between Switzerland, Hawaii and Nantucket...

I just return from the Azores on Friday. I was on Santa Maria. That's were my dad was born and we go back every summer for vacation.
I had my eye on a nice diesel series 3 for years but the lady thought that I was joking when I said that I wanted to buy it and sold it someone else. For $500!!! There are quite a few Defenders considering how remote the islands really are. Sao Miguel, the largest island, has lots of dairy farms and lots of 110 pu's. The islands themselves are just now beginning to be discovered as tourist destination. There have been vast improvements in the last 5 years as far as hotels and roads are concerned. I'm glad you had a good time and maybe I'll see you there next year. Only have 49 1/2 more weeks until I return.

Hi Eric ya pretty amazing place! That is great you have family there. My mom owns a home on Faial and it was my first time there as it isn't easy to get to from the Caribbean. Well worth the trip however. Next time I will check out some of the other islands.

Sure were alot of gorgeous Land Rovers on the island. People take great care of their vehicles there.

Do you have any idea where thos Alters come from? Are they a Portugese brand? I had a picture of a green and a blue one in my 1st post.

Take care and keep counting down the days..

Don

Hey Don,

You have the life! We all want to be you when we grow up.

Martin might have told you that I have been up in Nantucket all summer. There is a 110 beach runner ,130

crew cab pu,and several series trucks right in my hood.I go over and lick the tires on that 110 everyday.

BTW..............British Rover Co. in Pompano is now up and running, in case you need service.

Also,I owe you lunch when I get back!

Ken

Hey Ken...you are in Nantucket and you are telling me I have a life???!!! haha yes we had a great belated honeymoon in the Azores and saw some interesting vehicles there of all shapes and sizes. Maratin did tell me about the new shop in Pompano so I will check it out. I will still come by for the occasional visit to bother you and ask questions...

I bet those Beach runners are the ECR projects I always read about

Glad to hear you are well and enjoying your summer. I always loved Nantucket

By the way which of your trucks did you take up there for the summer?

Have fun

Don

Yes it was an interesting putty color and looked great...saw many others in colors I was unfamiliar with but only had my camera so many times (didn't want to look too much like a tourist)

I drove up in the 2006 Range Rover.Had to tote the NDK kayak, dive gear, and my chow chow.

Didn't want to need a new set of kidneys, after driving a defender 1500 miles.

The 110 was done by 4x4 in Vermont........Built up from his 94 d-90....He let me drive it out to

Great Point......I'll send you pics of it out on the sand by the lighthouse.

ATB,

Ken

good point about the Defender and kidneys that would be a rough drive. Sounds like you are having fun...bring me back some clam chowder and a couple of blue fish
