Defender Thefts up 69% in the UK as value rises

Land Rover Defender thefts up by 69% as values rise | Autocar

interesting read..

looks like most are getting stripped and shipped over seas (i.e. here and elsewhere) as parts or whole trucks..

when Values rise in the UK, you know its shortly going to become a free for all world wide with the prices.

Defenders don't wear out they just need more parts.

Tell me about it I had two defenders stolen 3 years ago both 90's. and Last year our workshop was raided and they took about 10,000 worth of rare spares. Now we keep very little stock.

If you're reading this and thinking of buying a Defender from overseas, please know that performing a thorough background check on a selected vehicle has now become a necessity. Otherwise, you run the risk of purchasing stolen property, for which there is no recourse when seized.

The prices here in the UK have went up quite a bit since Land Rover stopped production. Even for the old one, everybody thinks they are gold now. I would expect the prices of used imports to rise based on this fact.

The prices will drop in a year or so. Emotions are running high due to the end of production.

That's a tough call. MOT failures and wrecks will continue, and people will be more likely to hold onto what they've got. I don't see demand going down significantly, just supply.

don't count on the prices dropping, the forthcoming changes(increases) to the road tax for vehicles in the UK will mean newer cars will pay more tax even cars with very low CO2 emissions that are currently exempt will pay road tax, but the older vehicles of 70's 80's & 90's vintage will have less of an increase making them an attractive option for a 2nd or 3rd cars.

If you are in the market to buy a UK LR and will be spending a few thousand I'd make the flight over even for a weekend if you don't have anyone you can trust in the UK.

I will be doing the same when I am in a position to buy a Willys or MB from the states.

regards all

My take (largely slanted by LR mag articles, personal experience, and what folks in the UK tell me) is the stolen trucks are getting parted, not shipped out whole. It would be a fools mission to ship a stolen truck directly here from the UK given how US and UK customs both inspect vehicles before they are allowed to load on a ship. UK Customs uses acid etc to see if another number has ever been stamped on the dumb iron previously if they have any doubts about a vehicle. I have been called by UK police on the docks and have had to have UK sellers provide receipts for parts on trucks before the coppers would let them leave the UK, for example. Now that new take off parts are no longer being made, there is an even more voracious appetite to feed restorations or even just those trying to breathe life into an old rig with solid doors etc. I'd be very careful buying late model body parts and thinking you are going to fill a container and bring it over.

I don't see prices dropping, they have been fairly steadily rising for years.

The days of the running, driving, diesel 110 with a 12k pto winch for 700quid are well behind us, but it was cool when deals like that used to happen.

Good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement.
