Defender confiscations in CA

I just heard from a reliable source tonight that California DMV now has a task force targeting ROW Defenders. They look for ones without roll cages and confiscate them, give you a ticket and impound your vehicle. I guess a guy had a real nice ROW 110 built at West Coast Rovers listed it on Ebay for about $120k. The CA authorities tracked him down, took the vehicle and arrested him. I guess they think that to be legal you have to have a roll cage like a NAS model maybe.

Anyone else hear of this nonsense? Sounds scary.

This sounds like a variation of a story posted here about some east coast confiscation. I'm skeptical.

Then again, I was working in the SFBA in 1997 and a co-worker had a brand new BMW M3 in a custom-ordered paint color. We were on our way back from lunch one day and got pulled over by a CHP officer that was apparently on some task force that was looking for illegally imported cars. The car was an oddity at time and attracted his attention. He quickly determined that it was legit and we went on our way.

Few Facts, the guy wasn't arrested. The Car was taken. And the car was never on Ebay and the car wasn't built by wcr.

Why was the car pulled over to begin with??

I don't think it's illegal to drive a 110 without a cage.

I would think that if there was such a task force that specialized in illegal imports then they would be trained to pick out those vehicles. Knowing what to look for gives them reasonable suspicion or probable cause to pull a vehicle over when they see it.

As much as I hate the idea of a Defender being seized, most of the imports are technically illegal in some way and I think everyone knows that having these vehicles are at your own risk. I disagree with the law, but it is what it is what it is until some politician decides to change it.

Truck seized was Julian's who has responded in this thread. Your reliable source's only correct fact was that a truck was seized. It was seized for tax reasons (stated value @ Ca registration was $2500 not the $90k it was offered for sale for)-not because it was an import.
