Data Recovery

I have a USB hard drive that is corrupt. Freezes any computer you connect it to. Need to get the 30 GB of family photos on it off.

Anyone have a data recovery service they recommend?

Thanks,
Alex

I've used Tech Superpowers in Boston in the past very successfully for recovery from hard drives with defects. Worth a call to see if they will do a USB.

Have you tried a computer with a different OS, putting the drive in a different case or temporarily installing it in your computer?

I usually use CBL. They are worldwide and very good. Hopefully it is not physical damage as that is very expensive to recover.

What does the drive look like? What brand is the USB enclosure.

Can it be removed from the case?

Most USB drives are just normal hard drives inside a case that converts the interface to USB, many times something in the case will fail and the hard drive inside is still ok. The first thing I would do is see if I can take the drive out and put it into another case or install it into a PC.

I took it to a company here in Boulder and they said that the drive's read/write heads have failed and in order to recover the data they need to replace the heads. They had to open it to test it and give me the ridiculous estimate. I have one from drivesavers.com for about half but it's still spendy.

Drive failed int he first week- never dropped. Sat on my desk. My laptop went to sleep and it wasn't ejected properly- thats the error message I got. Now when I connect it to any computer it takes close to 30 minutes to load and then it freezes the operating system.

It's a Touro drive- 500 GB and I have less than 50 GB of Jpeg data I need off of it. Basically I had moved up my iPhoto library to it to free up space on my laptop. It has a back up of my lap top but I don't care if I get that back.
