Dashcam

Anyone use a dashcam on a regular basis? I am thinking of getting one. Maybe too much on Jalopnik or that I witnessed 3 accidents in 2 weeks in front of me. I am in the la-la-land of driving idiots.

I've been using a GoPro Hero for several years. Catches lots of stupid stuff.
Decided to buy it after a near miss on my way to work at 3:00AM. Car decided he didn't like his shade of red and waited till I was 50ft from the intersection and floored it. I swerved behind him and missed him. Guess he wanted a new car if he survived the T-bone.
No witnesses, so it would have been his against mine.

I use an eprance GW1. Cheap on amazon and takes high quality video. I switch the camera between the vehicles I drive. I should just buy a dedicated camera for each vehicle. I have not captured anything exciting; just day after day of dropping/picking up kids from school, going to kids soccer practice, and driving to and from work. That is a good thing to me.

Not sure if I ended up using that particular app but I tried one of those and the app functionality was compromised by using the phone for audio (spotify or pandora)

I think itunes worked ok with it.

I am surprised there aren't many GPS / dashcam combos. I just see one model from Magellan.

I might try that GW1. Don't need anything fancy.

That Car Camera DVR app bundles all of this together and more. It places date and time (to the second), location, direction as well as the audio and visual recording in 1920x1080 down to 640x480 with frame rates of 7, 15, or 30 FPS. It can loop the recordings in 2 to 30 minutes loops and retain between 1 and 20 loops. Easy uploads, etc. I have seen a few options and nothing comes close.

Hans, you will have fun with it. I use the iOttie with good results. You can rotate the iPhone horizontal and the lens projects out far enough the mount is not in the view finder. $17 to your door: http://www.amazon.com/iOttie-HLCRIO1...ttie+HLCRIO104

Sweet! I appreciate info Russell.

Also, I hope they update the app so it will record from both cameras on the iPhone. That way I can capture what's going on behind me (to some degree) as well.

get one ..! you miss so much in the periphery when your driving. I've used a helmet cam for 6months it really opens your eyes looking back at all the near misses you never saw coming.

also check this:http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wa...camera-6858395

while the plod were "looking" for him, the victim posted the vid on FB and 3hrs later his ex GF I'D him as drug scum & posted his name, address as well as the driver of the getaway car, on FB. checking the address on streetview showed his house and the car as well as a pile of vehicle parts in his front yard.

Some aggrieved members of the VWt4 forum paid him a visit, he later handed himself in to plod.
regards
Gren

Ended up getting the G1W. Less that $50 on Amazon. Liked it better than using my phone as it's designated and I can leave it there when at work or other safe areas. Won't really care if it gets stolen or broken. Hard wired to the fuse box through the ash tray so it comes on and off when the truck powers on.

Video quality is pretty good... 1920x1080. 120 degree field of view. Biggest difference from using it instead of a GoPro or phone is that it has built in stabilization. I might try mounting it to the roll bar behind my head to see if I would get the side windows too but right now, this seems like what it should look like.

I am most excited to valet my truck to see what happens when I am gone.
