Ram raiding as it's known used to be popular in the north of England ... thieves would steal a car smash through shop windows and full the trunk up with high-end clothes / goods and then escape. Typically they'd choose faster cars and in some cases loiter waiting for the police to arrive to then race them in a getaway.
Police scanners were popular tools of the trade and a couple of times the police mounted sting operations to confiscate them. One time they reported a UFo sighting and strange lights at a deserted location and another time that a foiled bank robbery was allowing money to be blown in the wind. when the kids arrived the scanners were confiscated.
I had an acquaintance years ago that would be part of the party scene at weekends. He travelled from a nearby town and always had the same high-end sports car ... but it would differ in color. We all assumed he worked at a dealer ... he didn't, he was a car thief with limited skills ... he could only steal one brand and model ....
joy-riding as it's also known was a huge problem in the UK .. it's decreased somewhat but easier to steal vehicles like defenders are still taken all the time.
