Question D-90 Source users, how many ?

The stats is a little above 3k, but how many "real" users,
if you take out one time users and never log in users ?

I guess it's a question for Chris. I'll say around 500...

Its tough to say how to define real users. About every 6 months I deleted accounts that have had no activity for 2 years as well as have 0 posts. Basically accounts people created to PM or email someone, or to look at pictures when you needed to have an account to view them, and never came back. Also with manually approving every account, I deleted about 30 new spam accounts every week. So the membership count is here is a more realistic base unlike a lot of other forums that do no account grooming and have a padded membership count like 20K+ members but only have like 10 posts a day. You also cant truely count the guest counter either because like one site I just looked at that had 400+ guests, the majority of those are webcrawler bots. Again here on this site I specifically block a whole list of web bot from creeping the forum so the guest count remains more realistic.

But to answer your question... running a stat report going back exactly one year from today, the site averages between 275 - 325 registered users checking in daily. The lowest amount was 205 members on Nov 28th 2008, the highest was 370 members, yesterday. Today so far, we are at 344. These numbers are not including legitimate guests who may not remain logged in or just be surfing as guests.

Chris, what about mapping the users, i mean using google earth
or map and having a page with the world map and dots for users.
I know it's like 95% inside continental US, but it could be fun to
know where the hell we have members ...

I found the numbers impressive also.

Wouldn't be too hard to make a "where are the D90 nuts" map if we had the data.

Seems like it would be mostly Mid-Atlantic Northeast.. if the regions people have in their profiles are accurate.

Not hard at all in fact there have been a few suggestions over the years on this very idea. The problem is as Charles pointed out, people dont supply the data. The majority of users in the past dont like submitting that kind of specific details. I can look into something that would work of the members profiles and maybe give them the option to participate in such mapping, by zip code say.

No way to go off of IP addresses? We use a set up from web-stats.com Basically gives you the visitor data from the last 1000 visits.

eg. http://nettalon.com/lastvisitors.asp

That would work as pure data-driven results, but for usable results (e.g. "Hey, anyone live in the Asheville, NC area that could check a car out for me?") or conversations/threads based on best neutral zone for happy hours, the actual user names would need to be attached to that data...which would need to be user-driven.

Aside from the point Joshua brings up, not everyone may want to participate so polling IPs from the server kind of doesn't give them the choice. Letting members have the choice to opt-in by entering their info say in a specifically identified/coded trigger field would enable the mapping and they could remove it just as easy is really the way to go.

But yeah, Kenneth's idea would be great just for a 3d geo map with user activity per region (like this):

I think it would just be interesting to see geo locations of users worldwide... I don't think there is another Defender forum that is as dedicated as this one.

Even with a opt-in zip code based system the 3d activity graph would be uber cool.

Frappr lets you do map your location but i hate that because anyone can get online and check the map, see where you live and stick a blank key into your ignition and steal it!

Then again this scares the shit out of me!
