Cummins 4bt in a 110 any thoughts?

Hey guys, about to get back from Afghanistan. Looking to maybe swap the engine in my '83 110. To give some back ground, it's a soft top 110 totally done up by safari rover in Orlando. Everything was restored a couple years ago. However, I kept the same old old old engine. Thinking about doing a 4bt swap in it. To give some info about the truck: it currently is an automatic (has the '97 d90 automatic tranny in it). Is it possible (or even recommended) to drop a 4bt in a 110, then marry it up to a '97 automatic tranny? Bottom line, I'm looking to replace the engine with a more dependable one (keeping it automatic and hopefully diesel). Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

It would be infinitely easier and cheaper in the long run to use a rover diesel instead, or a 2.8 international.

Just build up a 14CUX EFI motor with a 4.6 short block.

drive a 4BT first- it is the only thing louder than an old Defender. I agree with the MB conversion Robt Davis is nearing completion for a package.

An Isuzu 4BD1T is very good option, but a bit $$ to do nicely.

4BT is a very loud annoyingly rattly motor in a vehicle like a D90. Not enough sound proofing and distance between you and the motor - and I LOVE diesels....

The 4BD1T is a smoother quieter motor for sure, the MB even more so, and a VW TDI more so again.

If you're stuck on the 4BT for the cheap factor keep in mind the motor itself IS the cheap easy part no matter what you go with!

The ZF will not like the diesel power band, too much low torque before it can build line pressure. Talk with Ashcroft or another good ZF builder as you WILL need to beef it up first. That said you'll be cheaper and easier in the long run to sell the ZF, buy an adapter from Marks (or build one yourself) and mate the LT230 to a 4L80.

--------> Or use a Rover 200-300-TD5... way easier for sure.
