Craigslist Atlanta Defender Scam

Warning: Atlanta Craigslist has a Defender listed for $5700 it is a SCAM.

I emailed the lister and recieved this response below.

Note the odd selection of words and the desire of the seller to use a private ebay auction as the method for the transaction. Don't fall for these "something for nothing" scams, they will take your money.

Every major car listing site is plagued by these scams so buyers beware, if it seems to good to be true then it is too good to be true.

Also the email address of the seller was a yahoo account in a different name form the supposed Laura Becks in the email below.

Hi,
The car is still for sale.It is in perfect shape. It has no scratches, dents and it was never involved in an accident or something like that. You can check the carfax yourself, the VIN is SALDV2284RA943803.It has 76500 miles. Here are some more pics
http://photobucket.com/Laura_Becks The title is clear and on my name.I am forced by a bank loan to sell it so I need the money and I must do that.Don't worry, the loan does not involve the car.
My final price is $5400.I already have tons of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out.I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car, to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions.
Thank you.P.S.If you are decided to buy it,i will make a private auction just for you on eBay so you can purchase it there. That way you will receive assistance for the purchase, paperwork, title transfer and an extended warranty. They also are guaranteeing purchases up to 50.000 so we will both be protected.
Laura Becks

Also I just looked up the VIN and the factory color was Portofino Red not yellow.

This same Defender is for sale in the "For Sale" Section by Bitz for $14,995. Same photos, different vin #. The title of the add is, 94 D90 Hard & Soft Top, 14,995. I'll bet this is the legit ad and it was copied...

Yes, it is going around all over the country on Craigslist. We should let Bitz know so he can persue legal action against the scammers.

I'm sure it would be worth it to pursue legal action over pictures heisted from a classified ad.

It is an easy case of fraud but catching the bastards from overseas would be the hard part.

--- Note Sarcasm.

It is true this person is attempting to defraud somebody with this run-of-the-mill Craigslist scam we've all seen a thousand times. However, I'm guessing that using pictures from another person's classified ad doesn't constitute fraud. Certainly nothing worth pursuing.

Yeah, fraud is perpetrated against a buyer. The only damage the actual owner suffers is the unauthorized use of pictures. I doubt there is much precedent for recovering damages by hampering a legitimate sale with a fake one.

Look, if it sounds too good to be true...

If someone doesn't know that by now, best of luck to them.

While driving home from the Rally, there was quite a long story on NPR about this internet group-darned if I can remember the name just now - that was scaming the scammers.

They succeded in getting a couple of Nigerian guys to travel to an unlpleasant part of Africa, promise them that someone was going to meet them with bags-o-cash, got them stranded in this location and never did tell that that they were jerking them around. This went on for a couple of weeks before the scammers finally got someone from their home to wire enough money to them for the return trip.

"What's good for the goose...."

Wow that is an incredibly realistic looking phishing site. Scary as hell. Of course if you look the item number on ebay it comes up with nothing. The sophistication of the scam begs to be investigated by some agency. Who looks into this sort of thing?

Has anyone taken the liberty to report that fraudulent auction to ebay fraud department? If not, I'll do it.

That was on This American Life. Quite an entertaining segment.
