Chris, can we lock this thread? It's going nowhere and helping nothing.

This is sad. One of the reasons this board has worked well in the past was 1) a lack of flame wars, and 2) on-topic stuff. Sure, there's a section for dumb games, and misc stuff is typically ok when it's within reason, but its usually the misc crap that starts the flame wars going, and I don't think its ever been CvC's intent to have the misc section become a free-for-all. When you post random musings, especially when they are provocative, you have to know that you're stirring something up - and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I don't come here for schadenfreude or to participate in a fray. For all the talk of forum etiquette (which is all ethereal anyway), you have to realize there is an unwritten understanding that you are bound by some reasonable proportion of on, and off topic material. Martin Podgorski, and others sell a some amount of non D-90 stuff here, but no one minds because they also contribute lots of useful stuff. People that hawk nokia's with one-post spam get axed, forum etiquette is a continuum - not black and white. So chill.

I hate even getting involved in this stuff, but I for one want the site to remain useful and realtively self-moderating.

Being 99.9% on topic is what makes this forum stand out in my opinion.

As a moderator over at landroversonly.com, I invite you to go post these type of threads in the Lounge section there, it'll fit in better. D90 is not the place for it.

Very well put Jim, thank you very much.

Self moderation works when people use their better judgment and moderate themselves before posting. Naturally this doesnt always happen and it would be unrealistic to think that it will happen all the time. I only ask people to try and take a higher level thinking before jumping into something and usually here on this site, people do so. It doesnt always play out that way but then again, when you bring together so many people into one place, not everyone will see eye-to-eye so some flare ups are expected.

As Jim pointed out, the site has never really been a place where anything goes but at the same time, I do want the members to come and have fun here. I do ask things like that we dont post porn, think before attacking other members, and try not to turn the place into a foul mouth gutter, there really is not a lot people cant talk about here, which is why there is a Misc section. Its not really a true E/N (everything/Nothing) section, but looking back at the topics that have been brought up in it before, we cant say the section is not to be used like that, because it kind of is. I may not care for some topics covered once in a blue moon, but thats just a personal thought on that particular topic so I simply choice not to dive into it but I wont delete it unless people start reporting it or complaining. What may not agree with me, may turn into a legendary thread for a majority of others. So unless I think the removal of something to calm things down is the only option, I try not to delete threads, but it does happen. If you look at most of the moderation I do, most of my thread deletions are in fact in the the Classified section where something has gone way out of hand, or if a 1 post wonder comes in and makes a half ass classified with no info, or if someone refuses to comply with the rules, or again as Jim pointed out, a spammer account pimping cell phone sites.

The puppy thread was removed was because of the number of PMs I received complaining about it as well as a few people who used the 'Report this post" feature. While I personally may have not cared for it, I didnt feel like it warranted removal just because I personally didnt love the thread, but in the end, the masses spoke and action was taken. Anyone here, is welcome to post what they feel like posting in the Misc section as long as it doesnt violate the current rules, but as someone touched on a good point, that while something may not technically break the rules, one should also get a feel for the types of things that generally are posted. If one wants to post something they think is going to create a storm of trouble, they better have their thick skin on and get ready for heat, but it also breaks into a very cloudy area thats not a cut and dry decision on how to moderate it when it starts going south. I dont want to be one that says, this topic is BS and I'm cutting it, when its properly posted in the exact section that its meant to be in. I'm not going to decide what misc topics will be of interest to the members. As I said, just because it may not interest me personally, doesnt mean it wont be interesting to 40 other members. I'll step in if it breaks the rules or if members start asking me to look at it more closely.

One reason I like this board is that most here actually use their own names. Sure, there are risks associated with that, but it really keeps the board in line. People come here as themselves, not some mysterious web persona.

Were I to start a public forum like this, I would strongly suggest members use their real names. Few boards have members practicing this, but IMO, it keeps the garbage out.

ďPack Mentality at itís BESTĒ

Itís apparent that you have not read my previous post on this thread! I realize that itís long & I apologize for it but please go back & read it in itís entirety after your done here.

Look at yourselves? You have made this thread into what it is right now! Itís gotten 736 hits in just over 48 hours! More that the sticky post for gods sake! That is a true shame! If you had any use for my Airborne article then you would have utilized it & moved on! Simple as that! Look at the hits! How many people utilized the link or had no use for it but they all moved on with the exception of 6 yes (SIX) negative pack mentality posters! ďYOUĒ! Your posts are right here & you know who you are! I am happy if I helped forum members out with this thread or put a smile on their face with my other threads!

In page order:

Your dogs picture

Rooster rons cock

nintendo wii

belching

Anyone have Ilustrator CS3?

Go Pats!!!!!

Golf balls

Calling all snowboarders!!! [Snowboard SPAM]

Reno, CarsonValley

Why Do People Type Like This (Courtesy Bozman)

Need I go on!

Serious Land Rover threads! They belong on the MSC section & my threads donít!? Are you kidding me! Shame on you!!

If you see a thread of mine or anybody elseís in the future donít take a crapp all over it like you have done here but feel free to post a non offensive, constructive remark up keeping with forum etiquette. If you cannot do that, just ďMOVE ONĒ 736 D-90 forum members on this thread, myself & countless others do it all the time! Itís a concept called ďforum etiquetteĒ!

Perhaps all those threads you mention would have been excessive if they were started by the same person. Not so oddly enough, many of them stem from common Rover owner interests like dogs, snowboards, and Reno NV. Even the cock thing came from some inside joke when a bunch of guys went out together. You're stuff is a just non sequiturs.

Instead of saying something innoucuous like "I was bored at work, so I posted a bunch of random crap," you got all defensive, wrote ridiculous stuff like "them sounds like fightin words to me boy," slung a bunch of insults around, and called someone a "rettarde" (sic). I really thought that it had become bad taste to insult people by comparing them to the disabled. Perhaps thats not an element of forum etiquette.

It would be so much better for me to just leave this be and let you have the last word in this pointless overblown thread, but I'm hoping you'll be offended and go away when I call you an intemperate, vacuous fool.

Departing90, dude, all you are doing is digging yourself in a hole and making yourself look like an idiot. I read your post above and think, "wow, look at the pot calling the kettle black." We try to pride ourselves on not flaming people here, but I think you are the one who elevated it to that level yourself. Sometimes wise men are the ones who know when to just shut up. You are always welcome here, just let this one go....

...I'm going to go pop some popcorn.

Finally a post worth answering.

Jeep rescue,

Digging a hole or making myself look like an idiot is a relative statement! Please donít worry about flaming! Let the fire roar if it does! I have elevated nothing! I started this thread with 1 post. Others are the ones that elevated it to what it is now. As you can see my other threads are not elevated! If someone takes a crap on my thread I will respond comparably & swiftly!
What kind of popcorn you poppin?

DepartingD90,
I'm all for people fighting their own battle but if you post another racially suggestive picture like that, I'll can your account. You asked me privately about crossing a line with me and you just found it... Straighten your act up NOW. This is the end of this discussion and this is the end of this thread.
