Colorado vehicle tax...

When you purchase a vehicle from a private party there is not a sales tax. When you register that vehicle in CO, what taxes do you pay? Sales? Use tax? Property? I am getting conflicting info online, as I realize when you buy from a dealer, you pay sales tax, but is that charged to a person that buys from a private party at time of registration?

In Texas you pay salestax once you title the vehicle in your name, doesn't matter who you buy it from.

If its like Virginia.. for a private party sale you will pay sales tax registration tags and titling at the dmv. Dealers usually handle this for a fee and as a convenience to customers. Use tax wouldn't apply Although its usually equal to sales tax and is a joke of a tax most people never realize they are subject to and therefore never pay.

And personal property tax is also assessed..at least here in Virginia but not thru the dmv.

From experience - you pay sales tax in Colorado when you register your vehicle at the DMV from a private party transaction.

Same in Cali.... sales tax (they call it "use tax" but it's amazingly the same amount) per the purchase price on the title transfer. Hence why so many people put $500 or other some small number on it, or leave it blank for you to fill in.
