Coin - KickStart

I'm a big fan of Kickstart and this is pretty sweet! Can't wait to lighten the wallet using coin.

Hacker News (for the one or two of us that probably read that site) has been having a circle jerk over this for the last day. I think it's the wrong technology. We need NFC. If Apple won't add it to their hardware, developers need to do it through audio (speaker coupling, like the old 300 baud modems) and two-factor auth over SMS. Credit cards need to go away entirely.

i don't disagree, but it's the step in the right direction. That would be a major paradigm shift...which IS definitely happening. I'm like George Costanza, it would be nice to carry a thin wallet again.

Still surprised that US cards lack a microchip used in ROW.

How is it powered? What if the battery dies? What if the waiter hits the button that switches to another card? Does it work in an atm?

I do like the idea of getting many of the cards out of my wallet and would strongly consider buying this but I would likely keep one extra card in the wallet just in case.

Waterproof and battery life are definitely questions I'd like answers to. Also, there are times when asked for the last 4 digits, I wonder if that appears on the little screen as well.

On the international travel note, I do like the fact that my full card number would not be on display with this card...

My AAdvantage Citi Platinum Visa has the microchip in it. I finally broke down and got a credit card. I only had work Amex and ATM until some asshat got my number somehow and hit the casino's. It's too easy now days to steal CC numbers.

Very interesting product though. I would like it. Too many cards in my pocket right now with rewards and gift cards...

I have had two nice ones in the last few months.
Somebody used my AMEX for a few nights in Madrid and two first class Eurail passes. They went on a hell of a free vacation!
Then somebody used my debit card to buy a few grand worth of groceries and stuff at 4 different Kroger's in Atlanta.
That one especially sucked because it took almost 14 days to get the money back into my checking account.
I hate thieves!

I haven't had time to look into this but when I watched their into video my first thought was that I wouldn't want to hand someone my card which has *every* credit card on it because you don't know what they are doing with it (although it might be able to tell you if swiped more than once on one card or something). I know it's no different than losing your wallet but it seems like a bad idea every time you hand it to someone and I agree it's just enabling old/bad tech instead of new more secure solutions. Maybe a decent bridge though.

If this had an integrated encrypted thumb print reader and required a pin to access, you would have the trinity of security - something in my possession (a physical card), something only I have (the thumbprint), and something only I know (the pin). Would reduce credit card fraud to a fraction of what it is today.

I was alarmed with the idea of giving my CC info as well, I was also alarmed with the idea when PayPal came on the scene way back when asking for the same thing.

This is why I never use a debit card linked to your savings/checking as a visa. Real money is gone until it gets sorted. Compromised visa - no cash flow issues to be concerned about.
Traveling in Italy (or Naples in this case), do not let your visa out of your sight. Even if just behind the counter for a moment. On two occasions my Visa was compromised and both were traced back to different women's clothing stores (need to come back w/ something for the wife that both can enjoy ;-) ). Miami can be a mess. Even ordering SS hardware from Germany, too.
Typical for Italians, visa sends a text that must be authenticated to authorize each transaction. Great tool that I can't get here.

From their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/onlycoin

One question we've been hearing is "What if a waiter/waitress accidentally -- or worse, INTENTIONALLY -- changes the card you want to charge your meal to?"

Here's where Coin has you covered: The mobile app will allow you to configure an auto-lock feature that will disable the Coin button to toggle based on proximity; when the waiter walks away he or she will not be able to toggle the card selected.

Good to see they have that covered. The phone app and proximity brings a lot of useful features but also requires you have them both. Now all they need is to team up with phone makes (or accessory makers) and have the card fit in a slot in the phone so you always have them
