Or just move to a phone app altogether....setup a "bump" feature. This would require all stores to move into the future. So long to the old timey cash registers and to Square.

Yup, but I think something like this is a good bridge - you can't make a change like that overnight.

In my opinion, the delineation between different plastic cards is totally artificial. Credit cards are merely ledgers. The implementation of the ledger is done in an RDBMS system somewhere. Just because a person has ten different visa, mastercard, and american express cards doesn't mean that it requires a humongous infrastructure to support each one. Different companies already provide this kind of service - the most famous one is called "Paypal", maybe some of us have already used it.

This doesn't seem much different to me from having a place like Paypal offer a "Paypal card".

I'm not sure what near-field communications would bring to the table. This "coin" thing is an account aggregation scheme, which is basically just an RDBMS supertable. Authentication is totally different issue.

It's because the patent holder is not in the US. But yes, that would limit a LOT credit card frauds (except for online transactions).

Apparently, everything you do through NFC can be done through (low power) bluetooth. I don't think we need NFC, but it seem convenient.

I just don't see the upside of having a touchless authentication system versus a "card swipe". In fact, I can see many downsides to a touchless authentication system, most dealing with security.

That already overlaps with Google wallet (or other NFC) capability. I like this idea in theory, but I don't see how it could co-exist with phone-based payment systems like google wallet.
