I expect it would be much easier to connect up from scratch rather than chasing electrical gremlins

Agreed. In a few weeks time hopefully I will be able to say with certainty that there are no electrical issues anymore.

The harnesses aren't that complex and repairs aren't difficult either. Full replacement is rarely warrented. Though would have to see the extent of the meltdown. Good luck with it.

Thanks Ren, it looks like one or two wires super-heated and melted themselves and a few others behind the dash and all the way to the engine harness. Hopefully it won't cost too much...
