changing gear in low box

Iv'e noticed while driving with others in low box that they pull away in first and change up through the gears. I do it back to front, pull away in 3rd and change down if need be. Decending a steep hill, 1st. Climbing a hill 2nd or 3rd depending on how steep and how long. I can't see the point in changing gears in low box, does no harm pulling away in 3rd its the same as 1st in high range. Am i the only one who drives this way or do others?

I pull away on 3rd low all the time, it is good between obstacles. Normally the guys I go with are in auto gearboxes and I don't try to match their driving style, they have a tendency to go faster than I do between stuff driving along in "D" in low range. I prefer to trundle along at a steady pace and shift to a lower gear when I need to same as you.

Sure. Use whatever gear is needed. 3rd low would be a normal pull away gear.

That actually sounds like a much better way to drive in low. I usually start in second low, but even that's too low sometimes. Especially when wheeling with guys in auto's.
