Carputer?

Yeah, yeah, I know. Nobody wants a CPU in their truck anyway. BUT, has anyone installed a carputer in their rig? Just curious. It seems to make more and more sense given the dirt cheap prices of hardware including the 7-8" touchscreen flat monitors. To be honest, I hate having my laptop taking up the passenger space. And it would open up the possibilities for interfacing with multiple GPS applications, etc.

One of the links D.Sheki offered up to me: MP3 car

It's basically cheaper to do this than buy the flip out Alpine/Kenwood/Pioneer street units.

Thoughts?

Sorta the same. http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...3243&highlight

Other then GPS what would the PC be for? Why not just get a PDA with a Blue Tooth GPS mount it to the dash and you have the almost the same thing other then lack of hard drive space, you can always add a 1Gb flash card to it to be able to hold some tunes!

You can also do video with it (not the best quality). Hook up a webcam and instant LR porno...

I think it has potential for a number of things Mike. Camera (rear backup for instance), mp3 player, GPS (running multiple cartography apps), wireless internet, all my workshop manuals right there, ready to use, photo storage, etc.

OK, but you forgot www.Roverporn.com that needs to be in there. Just buy a military laptop, they are as tuff as nails and only cost like $15,000. You just want to impress all the snow mobilers at the next winter Romp.

We have kinda toyed with the idea of doing this in my friends car, but it wasn't going to serve any other purpose other then GPS and maybe be an MP3 player. I wonder how well the camera would hold up? I know they use cameras on UPS trucks. Which PC are you thinking of using on that site? I am wondering what it has for inputs and outputs to connect to the audio system, how the GPS will tie and the camera. This could be a cool little thing, but I think there will be some trial and error as far as the software goes to interface everything. You may want to set it all up for a shake down run before installation.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure all of the details out. I'm not saying I would do it, unless it could work right. It would be nice to see if anyone has any experience with some of the issues.

For audio, all I would need are the standard left/right outputs to plug into my existing head unit. It has an interface for up to 4 cd changers or ipods.

On the GPS, you could just get an external antenna from Delorme (earthmate), or Garmins multiple units http://www.garmin.com/oem/ or http://www.garmin.com/products/gps10/ So you could conceivably use both.

I would think you would only want the unit to switch on when you needed it, not turn on every time the car is turned on. You may also want it to hibernate when the truck is off (say on the trail).

Camera's are cheap too. I'm sure you could buy an ebay special spy camera.

Not sure which unit on their site. They don't give enough info to be able to compare them all as far as number of inputs, etc.

Lot's of details to work out. Believe me, I've been looking to get a panasonic tough book...

Do you really want a computer with a hard drive spinning while you are off road? I would be worried about the heads crashing if you hit a serious bump.

I want gauges for engine parameters on the LCD screen while driving with preset warning levels. You know airspeed, knots, altitude, etc..
