Caribbean "Barn" Find

'95 NAS D90 found and bought by my brother while sailing in the Caribbean. This actually happened a little over a year ago, and I'm sorry to say that the truck has been sold on since its return stateside. There's a lot more to the story than I have time to tell at the moment, but I've been meaning to post up some pics for awhile. There are a couple of members of the board who were in the know. Suffice to say, the 90 had been pretty well abandoned, but I was able to help my brother track down the owner (who had moved away from the island the truck was on) and assist in the arrangements to have her shipped back stateside.

P.S.- I'm not going to comment on what my brother paid for it. I will tell you that the 90 was in ROUGH shape (the climate really did a number on the truck) although it only had around 53K miles on it. At any rate, I hope ya'll enjoy the pics!

Is that 2783?

How long had it sat? The top was in shambles, but the tires looked in pretty good shape and not really deflated.

Nice find!

Burke's Garage. Nice guys. My brother had them do some work on the 90. It wouldn't start when he first found it. Parts are crazy expensive in the islands! Most of the Defenders down there are Tdi's, so the V8 was kind of an anomaly. Ended up getting an OK from the shop to get parts shipped down direct from RN.

Yes. It was shipped down from Florida in the late 90's (Carfax report actually shows as "exported to the Leeward and Windward"). Believe it or not, there was a pretty extensive paper history on the truck.

Unfortunately, the previous owner had past away, and his widow had left the island. Luckily, I was able to track her down. My brother said that she was more than happy to talk about the truck. She said that it was her husband's "pride and joy" and that he had spent countless hours working on it.

At any rate, the 90 had been sitting in that spot for I believe around 4-5 years.

FYI- In case any of you are wondering what a few years in the tropics will do to a Defender, see below. The heat and humidity literally melted all the bushings and the frame with the salt air....well you can see for yourself.

That's the place! Yeah, everything is expensive down there, but we keep coming back. Good sailing, good times...

How did you manage to find the owner?
Did you end up replacing the frame?
Great story!

Great story!
Finding the owner took some detective work. All I'll say is that it's pretty amazing what you can find online when you know what you're looking for.....and when you're not willing to give up until you find it!

Unfortunately, my brother wasn't able to give the 90 a proper full inspection until it arrived stateside. It ran and drove, but it was not safe going down the road. Of course, further investigation revealed a lot of trouble areas on the truck, including the ones in the pics above.

My brother and I rebuilt his previous D-90 from a '94 NAS that had been salvaged. This was while we were both in college. He is a sailboat captain by profession now, and as such he doesn't stay in any one place for very long. It would have been a good long term project, but in the end, he decided he wouldn't really have the time necessary to fully rebuild the truck. An interested party made him an offer on the truck "as-is" and he decided to take it. Hated to see it be sold, but in the end, it was the best thing to do.

Josh, your ability to find number badge pictures is epic. Now can you find some shots of the rest of the truck?
