CARFAX Sucks

I try not to write up posts that are negative due to their persistence, but in this case, I feel compelled to do so.

I recently bought an unlimited CARFAX subscription, and found out that CARFAX no longer provides unlimited VIN lookups. In fact, an "unlimited" subscription now amounts to 5 VIN lookups and unlimited License Plate lookups, which are absolutely useless when trying to buy a car from a dealer!

Seeing as how a lot of you seem to be vehicle flippers, has anyone else experienced this as well?

CARFAX sucks any how. The only info they can provide is what the insurance companies provide. It's a pig in a poke.

Car dealerships and some service centers use it. Whether they input everything is suspect. I think its information can be useful if interpreted correctly. However the lack of information doesn't mean a car has never been serviced etc.

Your complaint is more about their unlimited service being limited to 5 look ups. Your complaint is sounds fair to me.

Carfax showed my mother's 2001 Suburban was in an accident in 1999.

this complaint is valid, unlimited means not limited to 5.

Having said that, I've never trusted carfax, there are plenty of ways to "hide" a vehicle's issues maliciously or not.

They're only as good as the entity providing them data. JimmyJmz example above is perfect.

It looks like Autocheck is now the service to get when shopping for cars. Unlimited VIN checks. I'm a switcher.

Those services are only as good as those who report to it. We use carfax at our dealership, but always take the results with a grain of salt.

The alternative to autocheck is what? Just curious, since I recognize its weaknesses, but have not been given alternatives

Paint-meter ( If you can't tell by looking / touching ) and personal touch

Priceless

I crashed a nice italian car, and I paid for the repair without reporting it to the insurance, so CarFax and Autocheck will give you nothing, my work was done by artist, so unless I told you, you would not see it ( even the paint meter read within soecs

Goose, you are hilarious.

I was going to ask if I could borrow your finger, but that just doesn't sound right. For those of us not blessed with gus-fingers, is there another better tool?
