Camp site near Lake Tahoe

My fiancée and I are going to a wedding around Lake Tahoe this month and were hoping to camp out one night while we are there. We will only have a rental car which will not be a 4x4. Does anyone have any recommendations for camp sites? I don't usually like staying in paid campgrounds, but I understand that may be our only option. After the wedding and one night of camping we will be staying with friends in Oakland for a night before heading to NYC.

Do you want to borrow a clapped out D90 for the weekend? It's the ultra exclusive 'Blues Clues' edition

Believe me, I thought borrowing his truck. The problem is that Amanda (can't remember if you met her) can't drive stick and she is staying in California longer than me and will need a car.

Soapy water / KY jelly, etc. is is basically a must. Yes, good idea to remove trim panels - only takes 5 more minutes to do so.

Isn't the west side of the California end of the Lake all Natl Forest ? Remember trying to drive around that end and the park service had the road closed due to heavy snow.
