I made the trip and went to see if I could meet the owner. I knocked on the door and a man cracked it open. When I asked if he was the land rover owner, he replied "yeah its mine and it's not for sale" . As he was closing the door I asked if I could look around it and pointed to my defender and said "I'm a rover guy".

That broke the ice, he went to get his shoes on and came out. We stood in his yard and talked rovers for an hour or so. He and his wife are really nice people.

As for the truck, he has owned it for 12 years. 4 years ago it blew a brake line and hasn't moved since. He plans to fix it up, but I'm not so sure he will get to it. It is pretty well rotted. It needs at least a frame and bulkhead and a ton of tlc.

He says it's a 1983 with a 2.5 na and was an actual support vehicle. He thought for borneo, but wasn't sure. All the parts looked proper to me. I took a few more picture and offered to help get more information with the vin, but he was not interested in that at this point.

I'm sure we will talk again and I hope that this tuck can be saved before it turns to dust.

well you've planted the seed. showing interest in front of his wife will do a lot of good....for the rover. "get that piece of crap outta the yard you lazy bastaad!".

Yeah, hope you left your number with him, or better yet, her.

That's awesome and sad. Never understood why people let cars sit and rot. My Dad's first Corvette he had in high school sat in a man's yard and we tried for years to buy it. Every time we would ask if he would sell it he would same some shit about how it's going up in value and some guy offered him a new Cadillac for it. Finally was rotten beyond hope. Sure went up in value. Speaking of this, what would this support vehicle be worth as is?

I think if it is rusted to the point that a whole new chassis is needed and you have to redo a lot of the truck, the originality and provenance is lost. With no basis for it's price besides what I paid for my CT and what I have seen i'd say less than $10k if rotted and maybe as high as $20k if in decent enough shape just for the cool value. But price is a personal thing. Someone might not pay more than a few grand for a rotting piece of history while someone else will pay $40k and put $30k into it.

Fast forward to 7:20. Could that be this truck in the background?

Doors are 85 and up. No sticker on the one in the video. In 30 years lots can change. Would need to do some digging. Certainly possible as a very early CT it does not have a ton of stuff that the later trucks have. I will reserve judgment.

I am amazed at how fast they are driving through the jungle just prior to 7:20...really impressive. How long did those trucks last before needing to have new wheel bearings and seals? Is there a good book out there that describes the technical aspects of the camel trophy?

I have always, well for the last 25 years, heard one CT event is equivalent to at least 100k miles. Hence the desire to find the support trucks! Or better yet, scout trucks, since they always had a backup locale given government uprisings, catastrophic weather, etc.
The event videos are simply amazing, but like most things, once you start digging a bit and realize what all went it to the program, it is near unbelievable!!
