How was it imported legally if it does not meet the 25 year rule, is not here under a non-US passport, nor here for display, modification or off-road use(with bond)?

I think there is a sticky on what is "legal" and what is not "legal" somewhere around here. My understanding is that you can get a "legal" state registration on a non-federal-legally imported vehicule. So.... Is the engine EPA approved? Is the truck NA compliant? Will the State accept the registration? Many things can happen...

Exactly. Chances are the new owner can get it registered as long as they don't throw a stink when the vin comes up as an '86. Once registered, diesels are completely exempt from smog in Cali so they will be fine. However, there is a chance that it will be denied if caught by the DMV in which case it is an expensive mistake.

Legal or not- who knows- (the governing bodies don't know)?? I spoke to the mechanic who did the 200 Tdi Turner and replaced all the bushings- and he vouched for the condition and originality. Another shop did the rear disc conversion. Bottom line, while it is 17 years old, it is in great shape and basicly rebuilt without regard to cost. It did sell for $46k- I offered $35k a month ago, and was shot down. How many others are there to choose from??

I swapped it over to the 12V. It was far cheaper to do that. But I do still have a 24v to 12v converter if anybody needs one.
