Those of us from Tanzania like to call that "Lake Nyasa"....course, we have lake Tanganyka and Lake Victoria, so I guess we should let them call it Malawi...

Drove 975k's today.

Trucks making a clunking sound just as it rolls to a stop, gearbox in neutral, clutch out. Sounds like e-brake sticking, maybe the rear end. Anybody recognize the symptoms?

This happened yesterday. New rear fuel tank but, sending unit was put in incorrectly and the tank wasn't filled after the install. Easy fix, massive headache. Custom's officers were escorting me to the border when I stopped to fuel up and this went down. Lucky for me they enjoyed being out of the office and were in no rush to get back.

clunking may be the ebrake disc pads worn down causing play between the now slack space between the drum and expander. quck turn of the 1/2" adjuster should fix that in a jiffy

Thanks! That makes sense. Tomorrow I'm headed to Kruger and I'll have a few days to wrench and relax while I wait for my buddy who's flying in for the trek to Cape Town.

If you pull on the brake slowly as you come to a stop it should change the noise if it is the brake..

Clunking sound may come from the A-frame ball joint. Have a look at the grummet. If it's worn, the grease inside might be replaced by mud.

Joints new. I'll check and make sure everything's tight.

To me the noise sounds like rear diff gears slapping, maybe caused by something in the e-brake catching then letting loose, or something in the diff catching. When it's knocking, it's loud enough that I wonder if somethings going to completely lock up the next time it knocks. Keep in mind, putting the gearbox in first, clutch out, idling at the same slow speed equals zero knocking. And when rolling there's no knock until the trucks going forward under 1mph. The knock can easily be avoided at intersections by slowing down very quickly from 3mph to zero.

if you want to rule the ebrake in or out, take your 1/2 open end, go under and completely loosen the adjust bolt a few turns on the back of the ebrake (counterclockwise). that will clearly seperate the pads from the drum. Then drive it (no ebrake FYI) and see if the noise is gone.

The problem was...rear half shafts. The splines are so worn that it's remarkable they hadn't spun inside the hubs yet. Both axles are being rebuilt now, should be done by tomorrow at 5...how so fast???? Well, the guy working on my truck, Vernon, his claim to Land Rover fame...when he worked for Land Rover between 1992 and 1996, he built camel trophy trucks! Click image for larger version

That's cool. Will be like a blast from the past for him..if you need any parts Matt, I know I've said it before... But I'll say it again.. Just let me know and I'll ship em to you as fast as possible.. Although I'm sure parts for landies aren't scarce in Africa. My wife and I just did a couple of events over here and we have itchy feet to get back on the road..hoping that we may coordinate a couple of weeks with you guys there in our camels... That would be kinda cool...I may even be able to get a couple of friends to drive my other 2 as well..4 camels trekking across Africa... Uber cool..

When Hinckley changed Rivky's haulout date Rebecca told me to keep my trip to Africa as planned, she would handle everything. Love that girl.

What a great story! I just read through all of it.

If you're able, make a stop in Betty's Bay (about an hour and a half from Cape Town) to check out the penguins!
