Buying tires stupidity

I'm looking for some Toyos for my wife's GL230 in order to save the snow tires for winter. The local store, Les Schwab, is crap these days, so we wanted to buy from America's Tire or other. Problem is they are telling us that it is ILLEGAL to ship Toyo tires to Oregon because It is a Les Schwab state.... So Les Schwab takes all the Toyos and charges more than $100 per tire more than what you can get in a non-Les Schwab state.

We are going to try to check with some of the independent shops in the area, but that is the situation so far.

Any one else deal with this? Any way around it?

Can you buy a set on ebay and see if it lets them ship to you? I saved like 500 for my LR3 by getting tires on ebay and then paying the 80 bucks to mount and balance. Next time I need tires I'll do this again.

That's the type of thing I'm thinking. But I'm thinking this "legal" issue is actually an agreement between the companies, or some kind of court order Les Schwab has against the other companies. Meaning that even if I do manage to get a set of them, only they are allowed to mount the tires here in Oregon.

Why do I feel like I'm trying to import a ROW Defender?

I refuse to believe that a local tire place won't take your money and mount your tires regardless of where they came from... because cash that's why

Try living in Canada. Wholesale tire prices are higher than retail US prices. The whole tire industry is legal organized crime.

Insane. Does this apply to all tire brands or just Toyo?

Have you tried Tirerack? I just tested with a shipping quote and it let me enter Oregon up to the checkout screen for some random Toyo tires.

I bought my MT's in Washington and they took the tax off even as I said I was from Oregon. I think it's all about the individual shop you're dealing with.

Things will get better in Canada after that new cost/price justification legislation finally takes hold. Or so they say...

Going to have to check with the others like Tirerack as well.

My wife called Discount Tire online, but I don't yet know what other options she has researched.

We'll figure it out one way or another.

Just got Firestone Destination AT's for the Suburban from TireBuyer.com. TireBuyer.com had a supplier in NJ so I had to pay tax but shipping and a coupon made it $50 less than Tirerack. Might be worth to see what they can do the tires for.

Also, do the tires have to be Toyo? Should be some other really good options available.

Discount Tire matches prices and so do many others. Try a different shop or ask for a manager and see what they can do.

Was going to mention that too. Most large chain stores that sell tires (not Costco or Sam's) price match and they don't always have to be the same exact tire, they can be 'comparable'. They just won't match the price of an on-line deal.
