Buying a Defender

Hello,

I am new to this site and looking for information about the Defender 90ís. I have wanted one for a decade and am looking to buy now. I have had quite a few 4x4ís but as of now, have yet to drive a Defender.

I am going to look at one in Houston and if I can get the dealer to be reasonable, plan to buy.

Anyone have any suggestions on a max price for this vehicle? Here is the link and any help would be greatly appreciated. I donít offend easy, so if the price is stupid high, let me know.

Thanks, Rod Kelley

The truck sure has been passed around! I would really check it out well! read all of the treads you can on this forum on purchasing. It's pretty stock from what I can tell...28K, although it would depend on several factors...it could go for 32k high end. IMO.

You'd be paying a luxury dealer a premium - if you're fine with that, then buy it. Plenty of nice trucks in similar condition for $20k less - just maybe not with 56k miles, and not for sale through a dealer more than likely.

The truck is north east truck, so you should look for corrosion, particularly in the rear cross member, the bottoms of the doors, the foot wells and seat boxes. If you are serious about purchasing, you may want to consider taking it to a mechanic in the area familiar with Land Rovers to get it checked out before you purchase.

I agree with others who have posted, there are plenty of other trucks available without the dealer premium if you are patient and diligent. Good luck.

Price too high as has been stated, spend a weekend reading posts here then go look it over very carefully. Especially underneath. I think you could do much better if you are willing to spend that kind of cash. Welcome to the boards.

It's probably a good life tip not to buy anything from a person that incorporates under the name "Crave Luxury."

My 90 has 27K miles and I didn't pay that much. Keep looking and be patient. Lots of great info on the forum. (my 90 is on the US as thats my home).

I just sold my 97 SW with 113k on the clock for $30k. It was real clean and looks like it had half the miles. You should be able to get a good truck south of 100k miles for the mid $30s.

Agreed with the above. I know I paid a premium for my 1994, but with almost no rust and only 26K original 1-owner miles, it was still $20,000 less than this one. I had also wanted a D90 for over a decade and couldn't resist when I found the 'right' one. You ought to look at this Houston truck and drive it just to see if the bare-bones nature of it is for you. I personally prefer having the soft top over the station wagon, as well as the manual transmission from the 94/95 vs the 97s which were all automatics. It seems like there are always a few for sale in the Austin area. Just have anything you're looking at inspected prior to purchase and look thoroughly for rust (you find plenty of posts here about what/where to look for it). Good luck!
