Burning Man

We are planning Burning Man 2015 and want to ask a lot of questions.
Is anyone who has attended willing to take a call to field 15 minutes of questions?

I fly in. I also build the airport and run it every other day. I camp with my airplane (it is quieter at the airport). It is a hoot, provided you can take the heat and like psy-trance music. It is a sensory overload but good clean fun. Lots of law enforcement, lots. Drug use is very undercover, but carloads of booze, here there and everywhere. It is a major trade food, but you need to bring your on folding cup. Personally I bring enough booze to account for about 10% of the 185's useful load.

Small vid I shot flying there:

The actual burn:

I used to go to the Black Rock before Burning Man. I've even climbed up to the top of Black Rock, camped at Fly Geyser or Cottonwood Canyon. Leadville was a great place to camp also. Don't know about now, Burning Man changed the focus on the area, IMHO not for the better.

10% on a Cessna 185? Hope you leave enough room for the Engel to keep it cool!

Cool? Cool? What is this cool you refer to? It is born on the sun, fool, hot. However, I have a source for ice, can't make a decent martini without ice, or olives for sure. My son got me a itty bitty cocktail shaker, just for Burning Man. That and little umbrellas for other drinks.

So finally got back from Burning Man. I was there for about two weeks prior to build the airport. Since my aircraft’s propeller, a new one, failed at 1.5 hours (another story) I had to drive the trusty Defender to the event. Well it turned out the Animal Headed Gods thought this was a good idea, since the Burning Man Org vehicles assigned to us died. So the Defender basically built two 1 mile long, 70’ wide runways along with an ultralight runway a heliport and parking for 300 aircraft dived into a camping ramp and parking ramp. So how do you do this. You survey in the two runways on the best pieces of Playa you can find, lay out cones about 1/10th of a mile apart. Then you hook up a dune buster drag to the pintle. You drag the runways and parking areas flat as you can at around 5mph. Then you call in the army of water trucks to wet it. You wait around 30 minutes to an hour depending on sun and wind for the playa dust to be like play dough, wet enough to compress, but not wet enough to stick to the roller. So you hook this 10,000 lb roller up to the defender and make 8 passes per runway. Do this for 10 days. Eaky-Eacky bang-bang for 10 days. Lucky the Defender is basically a tractor with a nicer body.

The Defender was also the main transfer vehicle for VIP’s from the heliport. Like Will Smith, Elon Musk and a horde of Venezuelan models and other minor mucks. Since the Defender did all this off event driving, I had a God pass (dog spelled backwards). When I was exhausted, I would call the perimeter control (they had 10 interceptors and rangers to catch folks sneaking in) and tell them I had to drive out to re-calibrate the windsock, pesky low bidder windsock. Where I would off load some chairs, some wine and burn a smoke and enjoy the sunset for a half hour of African Sundowner.

Then it rained

The dog drinking, Archer style

The Defender rolling

The rain on the playa

Yeah it's all bad...maybe it was too smoky in confined areas or the blood alcohol level was too high and it killed the virus!

That's awesome! These pictures show something very unique - a Defender being used for utilitarian purposes - and looking quite good while doing it! Those roller pics are really cool.

Nice truck and thanks for sharing...

Was that runway roller something they already had at burning man or did you have to bring that yourself?

My wife really wants to go to Burning Man. I'm thinking if she gets tickets for next year (there is a lottery) we might have to take the Carawagon and get some folks there to help us paint it.

We actually built that last year just for the airport, it is filled with water to give it even more weight. We also have what is kind of like a big square I beam & rebar box blade like thing we drag as well from chains. That flattens the dunes. Didn't think to get a pic of the dune buster hooked up. Next time I pull something out of the mine with the Defender, I'll remember to get some pics of it.

The most interesting thing I did with the Land Rover in tractor mode was with my old Series III diesel. I pulled a J-79 engine (F4 Phantom) on a skid stand into my C2 Greyhound via a snatch block and out the crew door. The winch system broke and the normal aircraft tow tractor couldn't move it. The Italians where impressed, Questo machine e un Armado (that thing is a tank!).

I would post some exposed baby feeding systems, but this is a family oriented board.
